Re: Did Obama win a mandate with his reelection as president?

Yes, he won a mandate to close Gitmo, end the mideast war(s), cut the federal deficit in half, accomplish immigration reform, lower medical care costs and all of the other wonderful things that he promised in 2008. Was not the reason he needed re-election in 2012, to allow him to "finish the business" that set out to do? Forward as we were promised. Now, how about that open (transparent?), honest and bipartisan government that is not red or blue but for all Americans...

I think this election with Obama being reelected along with the Republican House just tells me America doesn't know what the heck is going on. How does a congress with a 9% approval rating have an 80%+ reelection rate? It doesn't make any sense.

No. He lost over 9 million votes since his last election. He had a mandate and squandered it....recently, his core voted for status quo.

We are profoundly divided as a people. 51/49 is hardly mandate.

By the dictionary definition, yes, he won a mandate.

By many people's definition (winning by a landslide), no, he didn't.

Re: Did Obama win a mandate with his reelection as president?

I guess President Obama has at least as much of a mandate as President G W Bush had in 2004.

Bush received 286 Electoral votes and Kerry 251
Obama recived 332 Electoral votes and Romney 206

    From this article:

Following President George W. Bush's victory over Senator John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election, conservative media rushed to declare that the election was a decisive mandate for Bush's agenda, and mainstream media outlets have followed their lead.

Their pronouncements echo Vice President Dick Cheney's November 3 claim that "President Bush ran forthrightly on a clear agenda for this nation's future and the nation responded by giving him a mandate." But such pronouncements neglect important facts that suggest Bush's narrow victory is far from a decisive endorsement of his agenda:

Re: Did Obama win a mandate with his reelection as president?

If Romney had won with the same numbers as Obama, Republicans would ignore the popular vote all together and just keep chanting about how they beat Democrats by over 100 electoral college votes. However Obama won, so it's convenient for them to ignore the system we actually use and embrace the one they cared little for in 2000. Hey, it's simple, any way you cut it Obama won. Get the **** over it.

So did a republicant majority in the house (again). 30 states have republicant governors too. Squeaking by (51%/49%?) in a race between the devil we know (big gov't demorat) and the devil we don't know (big gov't republicant) is hardly a mandate to let Obama be king, especially considering that he got more of the popular vote last time.
