Do you think the sanctions laid down at Penn State in the Sandusky crimes is fair?

no, one child molestor and his crony probably-also-child-molesting boss paterno should not mean everyone at the university suffers.

Tell me why should players and coaches of the team in the present who had absolutely nothing to do with the crimes that Sandusky committed be punished?

they should not. but paterno knew about the incidents and covered them up. he and sandusky bear the blame for this, no one else.

the child molestor and the guy who covered for him: they are at fault.

I agree with you so maybe you can tell me why the current team is being punished?

the NCAA needs to look tough on this, probably. fairness doesnt matter as long as the image of 'doing something' is portrayed.

No. The current players and fans had nothing to do with the Sandusky mess, so why should they be punished?

Punish the guilty parties, that's what I say.

The NCAA is a joke.

They got off easy. years of letting this stuff go on. No one talked disgusting.

Should've been worse, 13 scholarships allowed for 5 years, but with unlimited walk on guys to the FCS limit of 65.

The NCAA tried to take the job of the courts away. I agree something needed to be done to Penn State, but not destroy the program. Im glad they are doing well this year, even though I am a fan of a different big ten team.

Everyone involved in the cover-up should have been blinded and dropped off at the Nevada Atomic Test Site. The innocents should have been left alone.

The administration covered up the crimes because their football program brought them prestige and income. Damaging those things is the only way to demonstrate the seriousness of such cover-ups.

In the public eye Penn State will come out better because of these sanctions.

Either way the reputation is going to be tarnished for quite a while, yet by doing these sanctions it at least gives the public their "hanging" so to speak, and might actually allow the wound (for the organization) to heal quicker.

Hope that makes sense. Tried explaining it the best I could.

For the amount of years that this went on for, I highly doubt only 2 people were aware of the situation. The rest who knew what went on either don't work there anymore or are too afraid to step up for fear of punishment. We're not talking about incidents that happened in an isolated basement of a home. Other people knew and shame on them too for keeping it a secret.

but why punish the students? even if every staff member at the university knew, doesnt make it the students fault. fire the employees. dont sanction the students.

To some extent, students are also responsible for letting this behavior happen. I agree, punishing them is harsh and shouldn't happen. I'm glad they chose to make an example out of the university and raise awareness of this kind of issue. While it may seem outrageous and unfair, it's about time this behavior gets exposed and dealt with. People need to stop covering their ears and saying "blah blah blah I can't hear you" and deal with the reality that kids are at risk for sexual abuse, no matter what environment they are in.

WHAT??????????????????????
how the heck am i responsible for a coach at my college raping children? i had no contact with our football team whatsoever. and yet, by your logic, i am 'to some extent responsible for letting this behavior happen' if a similar series of events occured at my college? these crimes are horrible, but the students are not responsible.

Not the present administration or team. They did nothing wrong and they are the ones being punished.

indeed, punishing these students is nothing short of sick. this was a sick crime. but they didnt commit it. it's ridiculous to see people supporting punishing innocent people 'so they can be seen as doing something against child raping'. if you want to do something against child raping, then DO IT! don't punish uninvolved people for your failure to prevent these crimes.

I think the sanctions mostly hurt the students... and the athletic teams in particular, than the school. So no.

For that matter, the past team did nothing wrong that I'm aware of. The legal guilt of the team is not the issue. The institution is being penalized for failing to fulfill the goals and ideals set by the organization to which it belongs. The involvement of specific individuals who belong to it in specific crimes does not matter anymore than for a corporation that goes out of business due to mismanagement and loses the jobs of its employees regardless of how hard they worked (thinking of 38 Studios, or Enron).

What's being punished is the failure of the institution and its workings to prevent a crime of this magnitude. It didn't live up to the integrity anticipated of a collegiate football program.
