Fairly simple question, do you think the Puerto Ricans will say 'Yes' to becoming a new state in our union this time around?

No. They'll probably vote to stick with the status quo like they have in the past.

I think they will maintain a free association.

That way they get tons of benefits without having to deal with the bull**** of all 50 states.

I don't know but they will probably keep the status quo.

51 star flag is awesome

That's true, but if they become a state, they'll receive approximately 20 billion USD in aid to help combat crime and boost their economy.

Or they could retain their sovereignty, legalize marijuana, and have a drug tourism economy from the U.S. that will boost their economy annually to the hundreds of billions.

their current setup is most beneficial for them. why become a state when all it means is extra taxes and being forced into the US governments pointless ideological war on drugs?

I think they will stay an association but if it was up to me id make them be a state or cut them loose :shurg:

While the majority of the citizens would like statehood, the rich would not, of course. Status quo.

I read somewhere a few years ago that Puerto Rico's current status is the best of all available options, and that that is a big reason they always choose the status quo.

If Puerto Rico becomes a state then we will have to merge Rhode Island into Connecticut or Delaware into Maryland.

^yep. they get loads of benefits, and none of the overbearing restrictions/penalties they'd have as a state.

I'm not sure you can cut an American territory loose, though there has never been a precedent for it.

That's true for the wealthy people.......and the many, many unemployed here. However, many people realize they can't continue their dependency forever........

LOL well i didnt mean literally thats why i said if it was up to me, but im a nobody ;)

I dont know the dynamics either to be honest but I dont see why not but then again my education on this particular matter is zero.
Can we force them to be a state?
What if they started doing something we disagree with genocide or something?

Remember this is not a statehood referendum.....just a "what would you like" kind of thing.

I think eventually it will happen.

We got enough poor people to look after, we don't need another entire island to care for.

I don't know what the sentiment is in that territory. So I can't say how they will vote.

My understanding is that it *is* a referendum. Now that it seems to have passed, it goes to Congress for ratification. If Congress approves and the president signs off on it, we could have our 51st state as early as next year.
