I see nothing wrong with letting the states handle disaster relief, and, cnstitutionally speaking, is the proper place for such a thing.

Some times states or entire groups of states are under siege. I think disaster relief is one area we do need a unified body and I like being the United States of America.

I am curious how such a plan would work state by state.

I agree with him. It blows my mind that people have come to look at the federal government as their savior. How in the hell did people ever get their lives back together without FEMA to step in and rebuild their lives?

He's NOT MY guy. I'm completely neutral and have already voted. It's just my lonely quest for truth and objectivism that makes me defend both Obama and Romney when I feel (IMHO) that accusations are false and distorted. I was just as vociferous when Obama's "you didn't build that" was deliberately taken our of context for political pirpose. The same thing is happening here.

Personally, I think FEMA is completely sensible as a Federal agency. That's not the point of my objection to this thread.

If people wanted to be honest, and think into the future of a privatized FEMA, all they have to do is ask a soldier how well Halliburton worked out for them in Iraq...

Ludicrous that we could even consider doing what Willard suggests, but lots of ludicrous people around these days...

Obama cuts FEMA funding by 3 percent. Romney-Ryan cuts it by 40 percent. Or more. Or less.
Its stupid to cut the FEMA spending by anything...There must be a better way.
Do states or local governments have a set amount of money for snow moval every year ?
What is done with those funds when it snows not (here in York county) ?
I think we have to work on the cost of borrowing money.

The problem here is that the GOP has turned so far to the right and the libertarian and tea party folks allow self imposed ideology to over rule simply common sense that Romney felt he had to pander to that element to win the primary elections.

So then the question becomes a simple one: If Romney wins next week, do we get the weak panderer who will serve the interests of the right wing? Or do we get the former governor who knows better?

.... you pretty much get the weak panderer. The guy has shown no evidence of backbone or core beliefs whatsoever. The only thing he believes in is the he wants to be POTUS..

Typically yes they do. Some states have decided to stop dealing with that over/under politics and unexpected savings go into a rainy day fund for unexpected expenses but I am not sure how many have them.

Re: Mitt Romney on federal disaster relief

I'm kind of on the fence. I don't see why one state should have to pay because another state didn't collect enough revenue to prepare for a major disaster. On the other hand, these are all Americans we are talking about, and it's probably easiest and will require less from individuals in the long run if the federal government pays for the program, because it spreads out the cost over a much larger number of people. And just about every state is under threat of some kind of natural disaster, so it probably all comes back around eventually.

An alternative could be to have the federal government loan these states money, I guess.
