Which was a bigger scandal?

Which was a bigger scandal?

I have no issue with discovering the truth and seeing if any mistakes were made. But a scandal akin to Watergate? That's idiotic. Watergate consisted of deliberate illegal acts. Best I can see is that Benghazi consisted of a series of mistakes.

Well, blaming it on the video was a lie, a lie he repeated to the UN 6 times, but you're right, that's not any kind of a crime. Calling it a "mistake" to deny a rescue attempt (if this is, indeed, true) sounds like an understatement to me. Mentioning that he's been to 57 states is a mistake. I think this is a little more serious.

To be honest, it's way too early to answer this question. We have all the facts from Watergate, we don't yet from Benghazi. Watergate was about getting Nixon re-elected and what appears to be a cover up on the part of the administration over a completely botched security hole is about getting Obama re-elected. Had it happened a year ago, I don't think there would be the obvious attempts to cover this up.
Ah, a voice of reason.

Common sense prevails!

It is now obvious that the U.S. government's original story about the Benghazi consulate attack, delivered by its two heaviest hitters, the president and secretary of state, was false, and, more importantly, that it was intended to deceive. How can Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton outrun the scandal that now chases them, a scandal that makes Watergate look like cheating at tiddlywinks? As if "Fast and Furious" weren't enough, the administration now gives America "Slow and Spurious."

"it was intended to deceive."

Just like Nixon.

Except that four died. Including a U.S. Ambassador.

This was MUCH worse than Watergate.

Strangely, this is falling along partisan lines. Didn't see that coming....NOT.

Or we could compare it to the Teapot Dome scandal.

There is no comparison, they are completely unrelated nor is there ANY reason to compare the two.

I previously started a thread that the word "_gate" should never be used after anything other than Watergate.

I do not believe what happened in Libya was just "a series of mistakes." I believe it a series of incompetency, putting politics over the best interests of the country, horrifically wrong foreign policy, trivialization of the lives of our personnel overseas, deliberate lies and diversions, and a deliberate cover-up - that the President would have gotten away had not the CIA and Navy got so super pissed off and blown the whistles.

I was making the point that it was a bigger scandal, not really that he'll be impeached, but still...

I don't know enough about constitutional law to tell you if the president has done anything impeachable, but the constitution says "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors" are what constitute impeachable offenses.

High crimes and misdemeanors are defined by the House, I believe. It's not like there's a list that says perjury and obstruction of justice are impeachable, but this and that are not. It's subjective and depends on the current House.

Allowing Americans to die is pretty bad. Lying about it is pretty bad. There will be hearings, even if Obama puts them off. I wouldn't bat an eye if he were impeached. What Nixon and Clinton did were not nearly as bad as this.

It is pretty simple. The House issues the Articles of Impeachment upon simple majority vote and the POTUS has a trial in the Senate with House proponents as the Prosecutors, the Chief Justice as the Judge, and the Senate as the jury which requires a 3/4 majority to remove from office. They can do it for any reason they want. There is no judicial appeal from an impeachment hearing--no Court has the jurisdiction to hear it. When it is done, it is done.

Actually it requires 2/3, but I'm sure Obama would take 3/4 if necessary.

So you think you'll get 67 Senators to remove him for this....OK....

You're also wishing for President Biden. Just saying.

A better comparison would be Watergate v. Operation Fast and Furious

I know what you mean. I used to have the same issue with "aholic."

Rage aholic sex aholic spend aholic.

They all use part of the word alcoHOL and they use it inappropriately IMHO.

But, I've given up tilting at that windmill.

No I don't think the Senate will remove him from office but I do think that the GOP controlled House will pass the Articles of Impeachment. In a time when we are heading into the second trough of the double-dip recession this could all be avoided if Obama fesses up before the election so the American people can decide for themselves. If not, the cover up to win the election will make him more impotent than he already is.

Benghazi or Watergate? You decide.
Watergate because it's the only one out of the two that is an actual scandal. Benghazi is conservatives' desperate, trainwreck attempt to win the election by turning Americans against Obama. It's the focal point of this year's conservative meltdown.

You don't believe they were watching the attack in real time via unarmed drones?

You don't believe Obama et al knew it was a terrorist attack when they sent Rice and Axelrod out to proclaim the attack was the result of an anti-Islamic film?

You haven't kept up with recent investigative discoveries re: this story.

Or, you are willing to say isht you don't believe.

That's called lying.

I am not sure yet. I think Benghazi could possibly end up being a bigger scandal once its all said and done. It's still early yet because they are keeping everything so hush hush. It won't be until after the election that the truth will come out, but even then Obama will try his best to have it covered up. I wish America could see just how dangerous this man is.
This is true. The question is premature given that all the facts aren't in yet. If the Obama administration is found responsible for inaction, then Benghazi is easily the choice.

It depends on how the Tea Partiers do, and if Boehner grows a pair of balls to stand up to them. The leadership knows that it's a political liability, but we don't impeach people for bad judgement.

Wait and see.

If they are both cases of Presidential cover-up then we have to compare them that way. Nixon went to extremes to cover it up, to the point the Supreme Court had to actually order him to turn over the tapes.

Obama's administration made a knee jerk reaction, an incorrect one, in whom to attribute the attack to. They corrected their error without any legal pressures.

Four people died at Benghazi, None at Watergate.

Benghazi had the brightest short flame. In the beginning Watergate was almost nothing, then its flame burned a great deal more than Benghazi will ever hope to accomplish.

subornation of perjury -inducing someone to make a false oath as part of a judicial proceeding; "to prove subordination of perjury you must prove the perjury and also prove that the perjured statement was procured by the accused suborner who knew that it would be false"

subornation - underhandedly or improperly inducing someone to do something improper or unlawful

Yeah the GOP is going to be persuaded by Obama's aw-shucks we made a boo-boo

Benghazi or Watergate? You decide.

Objectively Libya, People died, and our security of our diplomats was proven to be crap

But the press isn't going bonkers on this so Watergate probably will have a larger impact. Of course is Obunny loses and there is a major league investigation that could change

No one drowned at watergate

Look - I do not want to insult anybody for exercising their free choice here. But really folks, anybody who would not realize that Watergate was at least ten times bigger either was born very recently and did not live through that era or is voting with very partisan motives.
