We are not just talking about Lincoln. The industrial revolution didn't really get in high gear before the late 1800s. And by that time Republicans had become the big business party.
Republicans represented the big cities and its business. To give an example on who republican represented, we can take a look at the wikipedia article from the election in 1896. "McKinley forged a coalition in which businessmen, professionals, skilled factory workers, and prosperous farmers were heavily represented." United States presidential election, 1896 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Democrats however represented farmers, especially in the south and the midwest
Apparently you and I are saying the same thing in different ways. If i remember correctly Grant was POTUS in the 1870's this is when the Rep policies changed. I agree with your comment about McKinley in 1896. What I am saying is the roles were reversed prior to and during the CW.
Clarification
for example = 1850's -early 1870's Republicans supported civil rights, enviornmental issues, social justice. Dems were proslavery, anti social justice, champions of the status quo.
Once Grant came it is started turning around and by 1880 their politcal agendas were reversed.
I truly see what you are saying and I agree with it. But I am simply pointing out what was going on BEFORE Grant came in and the IR.
