There is not much, IMO, to be done with the "mental illness", nor the unhappyness..
The inhaling of pollutants and condition of the body organs, can be fixed, maybe, but there is a connection between all of these conditions.
And I am no doctor...but, I can sympathize.
My fear of pollutants prevented inhaling, and my fear of an early death caused me to lose some weight and improve my diet.
    Diabetes. (140)
    High blood pressure ( 170/60 * 44)
But these numbers vary, medication, diet, and exercise do the trick.
Probably, if this were the 1600s, I'd be dead and buried, so our medical care has advanced a little, despite the presence of conservatives.

And no, I am not in good health because I have an incurable illness that physically limits me and will eventually be terminal.

    2. My X kidnapped the children, I haven't barely seen them in years, and now it looks like she's going to get away with it and live in another state, so I won't be seeing them while they grow up, either. So much for being a dad.

    3. A couple of my best buds decided to use a loaded assault rife as the object of a practical joke on me. I flipped **** and got them in trouble. No more best buds.

I've lost pretty much everything I know and love. No, I'm not doing very well at all. I've been back in country for only a week and I'm already falling back into the 'old normal' of excessive video games and mood-food just to numb the pain. I want a way to express and vent my aggression but everywhere I turn I have to treat people like glass. In Afghanistan I would save it all up for convoy where I could then drive very aggressively, forcing people off the road and, in a couple instances, psychically push them out of my way with my truck. I would see some guys looking suspicious and beg them to do something stupid so I could open up with my machine gun.

Strangely enough, because I could vent, I feel I was fairly well adjusted overseas.

Now I have to color between the lines again, and I will, but that means the anger has no where to go...
It's healthy that you can and DO vent here. That's a start, Jerry. Vet centers and Vet support groups help. I came home an angry person and by luck, not by design, I went to Vet support group with a friend, because HE needed it (not me, of course!). It doesn't happen overnight but you can turn it around if you are a fighter, and you are.

This is going to sound feckin weird, but relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation help more than I can say.

    Hang tough.

I'm not sure about my health and wellness.

My disorder, ADD, is something that drags me down. There's no hyperractivity (thank God), but inattentiveness and to a lesser degree, impulsivity.

Physically, I'm 6'4" and a bit overweight, but that's because there's not much if any exercise equipment or willpower. I hate dieting and exercising, but it's good to do.

Pretty good. I'm 53, a well controlled type 2 diabetic who runs 5-10 miles a day. I eat well, love often, and keep busy. Don't think I could do much better.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

I'm old so there's a limit on how healthy I can be. I have arthritis but other than that, I'm plugging along. I can walk miles each day, and do, but I wouldn't want to have to dig ditches for a living again.

On the other hand, I'm not a hypochondriac like many old people. I sat and listened to a woman who when greeted with, "How are you?" would proceed to tell each inquirer how she was. Finally, I said, "Have you considered just printing it up and handing it out?"

The last physical I had was about 20 years ago and I was fine. On the other hand, when I was 10 the doctor gave me six weeks to live. I'll go out on a limb and say he was wrong.

I could stand to lose 10 lb. and I could do that by cutting down my beer ration. I enjoy weight training, free and machine. Running bores the hell out of me, though for some reason I don't mind the tread mill at the gym. Hiking trails and mountains are fun. We'll do more of that now that the weather is tolerable, as we do every "fall" and "winter".

Stress really is a nasty, nasty thing. I consciously work to avoid as much of it as I can. That includes avoiding stress carriers, drama mamas, toxic bastards and stressful situations I can avoid. You're going to have some stressful people and situations you cannot avoid, but I work at keeping them to a minimum. Meditation has greatly helped me to handle the stress I cannot avoid.

I have elevated cholesterol. The Doc put me on Zocor. I tried for a week. I can't stand drugs. I take maybe 2 aspirins a year. Blood pressure is good. Other emergency retinal surgery for a retinal tare I've never had any surgery. I did have Melanoma, stage two dug out of my right arm, but that's really it. Non-disease related, I have bi-lateral hearing loss since Vietnam.

Years ago I smoked, until I hated it. I wanted every cigarette to taste like the first one. They never did. I still smoke cigars from time to time, but I don't inhale.

Overall: good health. I'm just fortunate as I can't take credit for most of it.

    Attributes:

Good woman. Most important. She keeps me real.

Good dogs. Very important. They are non-judgemental and essential to good mental and physical health. Their love, like my wife's is unconditional. You can have too many wives, but you can't have too many dogs. Dogs never complain about your driving habits or your farting in bed.

Living where the life suits me. I'm happy where I live. Yeah, I'd love to live in France, Boulder, Vancouver, New Orleans, Athens, Ga., Portland, Seattle, Missoula, Banff, Ireland, UK, Puerto Vallarta, San Filipe, Montevideo or Tucson, Sante Fe or Austin. But, you can't live everywhere. I love where I am.

    Lifestyle.

Laughing to me is very important. I never miss the chance, especially when I'm laughing at myself, which seems to be more and more these days. I even laugh when I am alone sometimes. Why not?

I haven't owned a suit or a tie except for once in 20 years. (I had to go to traffic court in Ajo for criminal speeding when coming back from Mexico after a long weekend. Criminal speeding in Arizona is 20 miles over the speed limit. Good cop, great judge, traffic school and I have kept my word to the judge in Ajo to never speed in his town again. Also, at his request I've stopped in Ajo on occasion and spent time in the town and have had the pleasure of meeting some of the people there. I'm a better man for it.)

I don't hate anyone, or anything, to my knowledge.

Limited television viewing. Sports, an occasional movie and an occasional British comedy. I do not watch network television. I do not watch television "news". Not watching television is a great stress reliever.

Vitamins and herbs. I take vitamins, herbal supplements, Krill oil, probiotics and resveratrol.

Music. I listen to good music as often as possible, especially at work when i don't have to talk to people.

Travel. The world is full of wonderful people. Most of the people in the world are friendly and kind, even when you can't share a common language. Travel has helped me love the world and life in general.

More than anything I'm a lucky sumbitch. I have no idea why. Neither does anyone else, i might add.

Re: I am genuinely curious ....

I was severely overweight and unhealthy in my early 20's. I weighed over 300 lbs and binge drank a lot. Most of it came from blowing out my knee in HS football and subsequently being immobile, and depressed for a long time about that and other things. I was able to turn my life around at about 24, got a little therapy to help with the depression, lost 100 lbs with healthy eating and exercise, and quit drinking hard alcohol.

Today, at 31, I am in very good shape. I'm 6'2" and about 210 lbs with a lot of muscle. I'm lucky to have a job where physical fitness is a requirement, and part of my duties are lifting and doing cardio every day, in addition to a lot of very rigorous physical training. I run 5 miles every other day. I do sometimes allow myself to eat junkfood, but I am still very meticulous about my calorie intake, as well as regulating my intake of protein and carbs. I take a lot of vitamins. I have to basically force-feed myself vegetables like a little boy, but I do it every day. I am required to undergo regular checkups and physicals, and the results are always pretty immaculate.

All that said, I do still have a couple of vices. I am a light smoker (about a pack a week), and I do drink beer in excess from time to time.

A lot of men in my profession own side businesses, or have second jobs because we have so many days off. Sometimes I think about maybe getting certified as a personal trainer, and doing a little of that on the side. The effect that getting healthy had on me, mentally and physically, was overwhelming. It's just unbelievable how much it improves literally everything, from your physical well being, to your mental well being, to your entire outlook on yourself and life in general, to your disposition towards others. I think it would be very fulfilling to help other people who are struggling with improving or maintaining their health. And knowing what it's like to be in their shoes, I think I'd be pretty good at it.
