if the SS card doesn't count as ID, then i'm against. if it does, then i have no problem with it.

It has to be a photo ID, so no, no SS card. Driver's license, passport, etc., those are valid.

And why are you against it if the SS card is invalid? They're giving free photo IDs to people who claim they can't afford it, so what's the problem? There is no excuse for anyone not to have a photo ID.

It doesn't because it's just a piece of paper with a number on it. I could print them off by the millions on my printer. There is no means of identification on that card. To be identification, you'd have to have at least a picture, perhaps more biometric information.

Against. There's no reason for it. The significance of voter fraud is a Republican boogieman.

There's no reason not to have it, it's something we should have always had in this country. Voter discrimination is a Democratic boogieman.

I don't believe that the qualifications of voting should be anymore restricted that they already are unless their is a demonstrably significant problem that can be fixed with a new restriction. Nobody has offered evidence that voter fraud is a demonstrably significant problem because it isn't one. Therefore, there is a reason, according to my standard of judgement, for not having it.

Voter discrimination is a Democratic boogieman.

because if they're giving out free photo IDs, then they should just put a photo on the SS card.

It is an infringement of liberty that serves no practical purpose, and disenfranchises a lot of poor people, students, and the elderly. We all know it's a politically calculated move to prevent Democratic voters from casting their ballots. Can we please stop pretending it's anything else?

Ok I have no clue what you are talking about. So could you please clarify the details you seem to know something here. ANd I am not going to guess what it is.

I'm for it if we make it into a national ID card. :)

We've got one now -- a Social Security card and number. But those who got them as national policy aren't yet old enough to vote. ;)

No. I want a national ID that can be used to vote.

If someone cannot get an ID then they are like one step away from not managing to get food; thus, they probably have more important things to worry about anyway.

The SS card specifically says that it is not ID. It is a reference number. Maybe SS cards should be upgraded so that they do serve as ID but just a name and number is not enough to prove who you are.

The point being, it's a national identification number that refers to you and only you. You've already got one. What's the big deal if you have another one?

A SS card is not an ID card, and is not meant to be used as ID. A driver's license or passport, on the other hand, are IDs, and are meant to identify the person who possesses them. SS cards are not meant to identify anyone.

I agree with you, but there isn't enough demonstrable evidence to make people who are pretending stop pretending. For me, the facts that the voter fraud problem is grossly exaggerated by Republicans, that the main people who will be affected by voter ID requirements are liberal constituents and comments made by some Republican party leaders on the ID is enough to make it clear to me that this is more about disenfranchising voters than it is about anything honorable.

Understood, see my post #28. I stated that because people are already identified nationally, it's not like it would be a new or different thing.

If it's about disenfranchising voters, why are they giving FREE IDs to people who say they can't afford an ID?

We're already giving free money to most of those so-called disenfranchised voters, how about we throw an extra $5 in everyone's check and they can go get an ID?

This is so you can vote in more than one place during a national election?

I'm for it if we make it into a national ID card. :)

Are you sure? There were many civil liberties objections when DHS was approaching (and not yet arriving in) that territory.

Against. It only addresses one kind of vote fraud, one that amounts to a laughably small percentage of fraud much less votes cast.

What about absentee ballots, who's checking those IDs? Oh, nobody...there you go.

Who says you can do that with a national ID? Do you know what a national ID is?
