I've been hearing a lot of interesting rhetoric on this subject, for a while now, so I figured I'd throw this question out there and see what you all think.

ask the europeans who would all be speaking german now if it were not for the US ;)

The US economy has led to prosperity in many developing countries around the world, and the world is dramatically better off because of science and technology developed in the US. When the US takes a leadership role on global issues, it can have a very positive impact as well. Its record has been less-than-stellar when it comes to intervening in the politics of other nations though.

any time, any where there is a natural disaster...who is the first country they come running to for help? usually with their hand out

Personally, I think we are headed toward globalization at the expense, so to speak, of our own country. I don't dislike globalization, but I don't see any way we can continue to keep our own standard of living while buying goods that are, more often than not, made in Third World countries. Good for them. Not so good for us.

Generally, we've been a positive, for things like food production, human rights issues, and scientific advancement. That being said, we are sealing our own doom by trying to take the weight of the world upon our own shoulders, and supporting societies which appear unable to take the leap into the 21st century.

I don't think so. That's a sweet extrapolation but not correct, I'm afraid. ;)

Yes, the USA has benefited the world in many ways and harmed it too. American foreign policy for example.

we have done some great things as a nation. we could do the most good now, however, by reassessing our global role and by just being a nation.

if we enter another nation in the future, i would vastly prefer we do so bringing food and medicine instead of weapons.

The American way has always been "everybody makes his own success". Why do you try do undermine it with world involvement? :)

Because we've been underming the nature of the world for decades now.

I dont see how anyone could possibly say we dont do more good than harm...We sure as hell arent perfect and we do alot of things out of greed, but we still do more good than bad...americans are the most generous of all the industrialized nations

Welcome!

I'd say that historically, we've done more good than harm.

However, in the last decade or two I'd say it's been 50/50 at best, and in a few cases we've made things worse.

So how do i vote in the poll?

We have supplied all the money in the world that is used for trade. That's no small thing.

In the past, we have been a force for the greatest good. We make bad judgements from time to time, some really bad ones. Overall, the world without us would probably be quite primitive.

I beelive we have done more good than harm. Especially our foreign policy in the last 50+ years or so. Our foreign policy has been disastrous.

Perhaps a dark and lonely job but dammit, somebody had to do it.

Try to imagine a world with not one single base currency.

You find this positive? Wow, just wow!

I do. It would be much better, imho.
Eh, never mind, we cannot change history.

A little more explanation will be a good strategy to convince others.

This is NOT a political or partisan topic in any way. One country was so rich and powerful and consumed soi much that they formed the base currency for the entire planet. Even today, we offer virtually no interest and yet the world buys treasuries to store their monetary representations in safety. How is this not important or an accomplishment?

I'm an open-minded person so please make your case.

OK, let's imagine that Columbia trades bananas for wine with Argentina. Tell me one reason why they should use US dollars, please.
