No, philosophy is not a study of reality, it's a particular lens through which one can look at reality. It doesn't mean that it's a valid lens or that it gives an accurate or worthwhile view of reality. There are tons and tons of different philosophies which are contradictory, all of them can't be true, in fact, all of them can be false. Rand's ideas are ridiculous when matched up against reality, they only work in fiction because in the real world, they're laughable.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Someone cannot make up a philosophy which has no significant basis in the world of reality?

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

    A) It's not some modern thesis, it's a contemporary Roman writing.

    B) Tacitus is actually interesting to read, probably because of it's matter-of-fact prose, and I'm not usually into that stuff. So what if it's 30 pages. I'm lazy and have read it, what does that make you.

Then prove it using logic. All you guys are doing is saying 'its fiction' or 'its a joke'. By your definition, you are no better than Rand.

Then feel free to start a thread in the appropriate sub-forum, I'm sure lots of people would be happy to point out how ludicrous Rand's ideas are. Then again, you're a libertarian so you probably wouldn't get it.

I agree, it probably is quite interesting, and I should totally read it some time. I took four years of Latin and translated Caesar's campaign in Gaul myself (though couldn't hope to do that anymore) so I really appreciate knowledge of the classics and ancient Rome for its own sake. You should also take the time to read up on the beginnings of western civilization. It's fascinating stuff and really puts your own life with regards to society, government and religion in a much larger perspective. Otherwise you might continue to make statements like Christianity invented law and discovered the wheel or whatever.

Nonononononono..... Did I say Christianity invented law?

I said, "Yes, before Christianity stealing, rape and murder were not only legal but common. In fact it took either conversion or puppet governments lead by and only by Christians to stop it."

Good question. Perhaps I overstated my point. Or, perhaps most corporations start out with some thought to doing the correct thing but get lost along the way when the need to satisfy stockholders becomes the overiding driver. I think 'amoral' probably still applies, although perhaps not in the beginning of the corporations life. I hope you are correct, and I am wrong, about this. Wouldn't it be nice if we had some truly 'good' corporations to set an example for the others?
