the problem with most butter bars is that they don't know dick about being in the military. they do 4 years in college, 6-8 weeks at OCS and then they throw them out in charge of a platoon of guys. Personally, I think that you should have to have been enlisted for at least 4-5 years before they give you a commission. Most of the really good officers I have ever met were all prior enlisted. I was enlisted for over 11 years before I got commissioned

To answer Liberal Avengers question more completly, We made about 3000 a month base pay as a driver for standard forty hour weeks. We then made overtime at time and a half over forty hours per seven day week. In the begining we routinly worked about 120hrs weekly and that went down slowly to about 90 hrs weekly. Most guys that went over would not stay if the hours went below that threshold. It was a very dangrous job and they wanted somthing to account for the risks they were taking. (We were running the MSR's with fuel tankers and Johhny Jihad cant resist a good explosion. Thirty 10000 gallon Tanker semi trucks filled with MOGAS, Deisle 2, or JP8, in a convoy with 3 humvees for an escort. You do the math.) Tax breaks were also an incentive but there is a major catch and that was you had to stay for 330 days during any twelve month period to qualify. The various states have different laws. For instance my state California required me to be out of country for 540 days to qualify for tax benifits. Like I said we earned every bit of what we got. A few of us didnt get to go home to spend the money. I was a convoy commander which ment that I made 3300 a month base pay and was in charge of 31 souls and 31units and about 300,000 gallons of fuel. The army got a bargain I say. I left because my tolerance for BS had worn away completely and I had become an utter and complete A*****E to those who were not on my crew especially supervisiors. I didnt like that I was becoming very bitter from all the stupidity. That was the main reason I left.

That said it was the best damn job I have ever had. I fortunate enough to serve with men amongst men, to followed and to have lead some of the craziest SOBs you ever met. I consider it an honor to have worked with them. If I had to do all over again, I would in a heartbeat. No regrets. Cheers to my fallen friends and a drink for them too.

If I felt the cause was just - sure.

If not - no chance. I am not dying just to help further some scumbag politician's agenda.

    Re: Conscription- Would you serve?

Reading over the posts in this thread, it occurs to me that, were there another Vietnam sort of situation and people being drafted to go and kill Commies (or whatever the current devil is) we'd once again see widespread protests and perhaps a counter culture springing up once again. In fact, if Iraq and Afganistan had been fought by draftees, we could have seen a reenactment of the 1960's and early '70s.
