Consistently a bad move in terms of acquiring and keeping one's position, but the right spin can flip it into a gain. Usually only a marginal gain though, as there is always an opposition willing to capitalize on any admission of failure with their own spin.

In a politically enlightened culture, it can be a good way to clear the air and redirect focus and energies to the future. The excessive self-indulgence of modern life has killed the maturity necessary to maintain such a culture, but that's how it works in theory.
If you notice something good in yourself, give credit to God, not to yourself, but be certain the evil you commit is always your own and yours to acknowledge.

Admitting a mistake can be a good move #or a bad move it depends on how well you spin it and how well the oppsotion spins it. What is more important is that a politician learns from mistakes and does not repeat them, All to often they refuse to not only admit a mistake but also to change course as they think this will be seen as either an admission of the mistake or a sign of weakness (basically they are afraid of being attacked by the opposition). Thus in attempts to avoid bad press or political costs they continue to do things they know are wrong/dont work etc.
Some do change course but never admit the mistake and use flowery language to explain the change in policy. this is the most important bit IMHO learn and adjust is more important than saying oopsie my bad. People want results. All to often all we get is words.
