Poll for Republicans: Should the Party dump Romney and go with Santorum?

I'm not a Republican. I lean left on most (but not all) issues. This poll therefore isn't for me. It's for registered Republicans. As an outsider, to me it's looking like Romney has too much baggage to effectively campaign against Obama. It seems like maybe Santorum would have a better chance. I'm really not a fan of either man to be honest, but if I look at it objectively, it seems to me Santorum has a better chance to appeal to the Republican base.

According to election rules, the party is not obligated to nominate the one who won the most primaries. If it wants to, it can nominate Santorum instead of Romney. Should it?

We fought that battle months ago.

Romney has won the primaries, yes. But if the party realizes, "Hey, we're not going to win with this guy," it still has the right to nominate someone else. According to election rules, it's not bound by the primaries. It can nominate someone else at the convention. It could be Santorum. It could be someone else.

The inside game generally has not been run in decades. No chance.

Didn't Santorum drop out of the race because of family issues? I don't think nominating him would be meaningful since he would probably decline at this point.

It seems like many on the establishment are standing strongly behind Romney, but I wonder if anybody calls Romney up about issues like his tax returns. I wonder how much they are pressuring him to do a few things different... lol

I don't think his campaign if very effective this far, but I don't see Santorum replacing him. There are better candidates out there... some are on the VP list. If somebody else were running first on the ticket, some of the people on the VP list, I think the GOP ticket would be doing better. But if the RNC did replace Romney with somebody else, it would shake things up... maybe get a bounce, but I don't think the GOP wants to do that. It's risky.

Also the RNC is later this month, so we won't be wondering about this for long...

Perhaps a little too strong. I started a poll here on DP which you may or may not have seen, that included 6 Republican candidates and 1 "other" in case I missed anybody and threw Obama in there just to see who would be trending the most right now, as well as to see if, well, what the media was telling us had any validity.

I wish more people would have voted because there are only 17 votes. We know the media would have us believe that the obvious choice would be Romney to go up against Mr. Obama, and that a certain unelectable fruitcake was such the bad choice that they went to great lengths to mention his name as little as possible. I know there are only 17 votes, but just click the link and vote for Romney, because that glaring ZERO next to his name might be construed as a clear indication of election fraud!

It would be a pretty stupid thing for them to do unless they learn that Romney has been banging an underage minority boy on the side. While Romney likely won't beat Obama, the primaries show he still had the best chance out of rest of the field.

Santorum is potentially one of THE most frightening individuals to ever campaign for president under a major party's banner. It would surely mean a landslide victory for Obama. Of course, that might be what you're seeking .....
