One thing it makes absolutely no economic sense for the government to be involved in is mail/postage. At least IMHO.

Government can, and should provide the public with public goods (and there is a certain degree as to what qualifies as a public good depending on your perspective), but generally includes law enforcement, emergency services, primary education, healthcare, and national defense. Lighthouses are a typical economics textbook example of a public good.

The original purpose of the post office being a govt agency or arm

he United States Postal Service first began moving the mail on July 26, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress named Benjamin Franklin as the nation's first Postmaster General. In accepting the position, Franklin dedicated his efforts to fulfilling George Washington's vision. Washington, who championed a free flow of information between citizens and their government as a cornerstone of freedom, often spoke of a nation bound together by a system of postal roads and post offices.

Publisher William Goddard (1740-1817) first suggested the idea of an organized U.S. postal service in 1774, as a way to pass the latest news past the prying eyes of colonial British postal inspectors.

The United States Postal Service (USPS). Is it government agency or a private business? It's both.

The premise of govt is good...our govt does good and does bad...and most of the bad is because of the MONEY and the influence of money, through lobbiest...See our govt SUCKS because capitolism and private enterprise used our govt as their whore....they send legions of lobbiests with millions to corrupt our govt and its decisions. They coerce our govt to do THEIR bidding and what benefits THEIR private business. THEY beg our govt for billions upon billions our TAXPAYER money to run thier business...and to expand their business...LIKE big oil who gets billions and has never built a single refinery to increase capacity to stop the yearly RAPE of america in huge gas prices right at the start of the driving season.

Its not govt that sucks its the rich and the corporations that have corrputed our govt for personal gain

Name one thing the government does better than private industry.
Military. PMC groups have a history of getting crazy with it. Blackwater comes to mind.

Name one thing private industry does better than government.
Public indoctrination and propaganda. I'm the only person I know who doesn't even own a TV, or radio. Most points of view I've heard from others IRL come more from those two wretched devices than anything else.

I would modify one of your statements to read:

Governments ONLY stated goal is the common good... its other goal is to perpetuate itself: : Some do a good job, some do a bad job, sometimes they do better, sometimes worse.

Actually not necessarily , depends on the government and how its structured.

For example, is an AA groups goal to purpetuate itself? Not necessarily.

I won't disagree at all that money and lobbying does not serve us well, but by singling out capitalism you imply that other less capitalistic countries are somehow better and/or more pure, and that I reject completely.

I'll go ahead and give my take on why government, and why it isn't effective, or efficient as it could be in 5 words I've heard more and more frequently from people who get their salaries paid by tax dollars: "Good enough for government work". They'll get paid the same either way, so why should they give a ****?
