Poll: Should the JoePa statue remain up?

Should the statue stay up?

  • Yes. He is a legend in football and it needs to stay up.

  • No. It is a reminder of a permanent scar at Penn State, regardless of football.

Take down the statue. Cancel the football program for 10 years.

Anything else is just hypocrisy.

If you aid in the molestation of children, you don't get a ****ing statue. It doesn't need to any more complicated than that.

I can think of more pressing issues than the statue, like should they be accredited and receive federal aid still (Clery Act), how in the world are they allowed to field a football team, should the wins record that was maniacally pursued and in large part responsible for the cover up be voided? Over/under on $100 million in lawsuit payments? Having said that, rather than set up a fund for the victims or even apologize, it seems they're busy blacking out the Freeh press conference on campus (China would be proud) and actually assigned someone to guard the statue...They've clearly learned nothing and deserve no mercy.

Well on the statue specifically, it should be taken down and the victims allowed to piss on it before they melt it down into whatever. Alternatively, they could build a statue of Sandusky next to it, since the whole town seems to care more about football than preventing child rape. I think the lesson here is to never build statues of living people.

He didnt get a statue, he has one. Why remove it?

There are confederate statues all through my home area. They stood for slavery. They still stand guard at libraries and armies all through the south. Slavery is far worse than child molestation in my opinion

He didnt get a statue, he has one. Why remove it?

Because leaving it up says:

"We, Penn State value the reputation and money sports and this man in particular have brought us MORE than the pain of all the affected young men, and their families. We stand for results at any cost and it doesn't matter to us who got hurt in the process."

Removing it says:

"Honor is more important than a game."

It's a damn SCHOOL by God. Leaving that statue up is TEACHING something.

Get one of those scales like lady Justice holds. Put every achievement Paterno made, every trophy and all the brilliant coaching on one side. Then put the fact he allowed someone under his watch RAPE CHILDREN on the other side. All the trophies and laurels are launched into the stratosphere under the weight of his GUILT. This is where his damned statue belongs.

Comparing a football coach to soldiers, many of whom gave body parts or their lives to the cause they believed in isn't proper. These Generals stood for bravery and facing death even if the cause seemed lost. Papa Joe took a dive, his face the elephant moment was to turn a blind eye.

You might as well throw Thomas Jefferson into your weak argument. It was LEGAL to own slaves back then, it was NEVER legal to molest kids. That is a very simple concept.

Animal cruelty is despicable but if Michael Vick had let his posse routinely molest minors instead of dog fights he would still be in prison and no NFL team would ever touch him once he got out! Our society sees child rape as beyond pretty much everything but child rape then killing them. Some can see that and some can't- might be a function of who has kids and who doesn't but somehow I doubt it.

Most felony crimes do have those who aid and abet over a long period of time as receiving very harsh prison terms. If Coach Paterno was still on this side of the great reward he would be standing trial and as a convicted felon the statue would be removed.

There was a saying in the Army back in my day-

One 'Oh Sh*t' wipes out ten 'Atta-boys'.

This was one hellova 'Oh Sh*t'

Joe Paterno deserves absolutely no historic reputation as a legend...He enabled pedophillia to go on for years...he caused who knows how many more child victims to suffer because he covered it up.
Soldiers are heros, Men and Women of great sacrfice can be heros....SPORTS FIGURES ARE NOT...NONE OF THEM we have to stop that stupid chit designed by sports figures for personal gain.
Strip paterno of his reputation and take down the ridiculous statue...hes a criminal

You people are overreacting. Paterno is NOT the child molester. Yes, he could have done more. However, so could have a few administrators at PSU, administrators whose entire mind and soul were not completely absorbed in coaching football and who had the greater responsibility to do what should have been done.

To wipe out a man's entire legacy because of someone else's criminal behavior is unusually vindictive, cruel, and unjust.

Fact is Paterno was told and he did the absolute minimum. He was the one with the most power on campus and the highest paid employee. He didn't work for them, they worked for him and adored him, he called the shots. Technically it was his job to pass the info on to the athletic director, but he had a moral responsibility to do so much more. That's as simple as it is.

Paterno had ALL the power and there was so much more he could've done and yet he chose not to. That's the legacy he leaves behind.

That is my sentiments EXACTLY...

Paterno could have stopped it, but some stupid game was more important to him. He can eat a piping hot bowl of dicks.

Sorry your all wrong sig...its not someone elses criminal behavior...it was HIS, he enabled Sandusky to continue sexually assaulting child victims for decades. He turned his back on all those kids for PROFIT and Football and allowed them to be victims of assault which affects them their entire life.
Paterno did that all on his own...yes the adminstrators are culpable that doesnt lesson Paternos role in the criminality of it all...he deserves NOTHING

He was an enabler.

Whats the old saying.

"All that evil needs to flourish is for good to stand by and do nothing."

A kiddie rapist enabler is as bad as the kiddie rapist himself.

Agreed. He's guilty of negligence and guilty by association.

But it is not the ONLY legacy he leaves behind, is it?

A kiddie rapist enabler is as bad as the kiddie rapist himself.

That would depend upon the degree to which he was an enabler. Had he actually witnessed such behavior and did nothing about it, you might have a point; but such is not the case. What he was witness to was unsubstantiated hearsay and rumors, particularly one not-very-credible story about an incident which allegedly occurred in a locker room shower where a grown man sodomized a ten year old boy without the boy screaming in absolute agony. Therefore, your point borders upon the ridiculous.

One of the biggest discussions now is whether the statue of Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in D-1 history and a veritable legend in all of college football and the closest thing to a living god in Pennsylvania, should remain standing in front of Happy Valley.

What say you?

Take it down, melt it down, destroy it if people are thinking like this.

Anyone who thinks a "football coach" is the closest thing to a living god needs to be forcefully re-educated.
