Mandatory Organ Donation

After death do you think it should be mandated that organs are used to save lives?

I don't believe that the state should be able to harvest your organs as a mandate, however, I wouldn't necessarily object to the default being organ donation where no legal request or expressed wish not to donate is given.

I've given my approval for any and all parts of my body to be used either as organ donations or as tools for training new doctors - I'm not so selfish as to think I'm going to need it after I'm dead and I'm not religious so burial as part of a religious rite isn't of interest to me. But since I've decided to donate, I'd hate there was some mix up and they didn't see my donation card or it got lost or nobody related to me was in the hospital or at the scene when I died to let them know my wishes and because not donating is the default now, my wishes wouldn't be honored.

I'm unsure. Probably I would be ok with it.

That's how it works in many countries. It's not about your family's wishes, your religious beliefs, your politics or anything like that. It just comes down to how freaking lazy we all are. You can be completely against the principle, but when push comes to shove, you're just going to do what's easy and convenient for yourself. There's a huge amount of literature on this subject, and it's absolutely fascinating how easy we are to manipulate by simple things. Mandated opt-out countries have hugely successful programs, with donation rates as high as 99.98%.

If we can drastically increase the amount of organ donations by really just switching a few words around, and helping tens of thousands of people, I feel that we're less of a country because we get into stupid squabbles about this and decide its better to let those people die.

Not mandated but it should be the default position.
