yu mean you missed the great light bulb debate? what a treat !! people were incensed that the gubmint was going to ban their light bulbs....LSS, there wasn't much of a ban and it was only the 100 watt bulbs, or something like that. Some people were ready to nuke the communists in congess over the issue...I think it was only surpassed by the Michelle Obama nanny state thing over giving school kids healthier options for lunch. Damn that woman! What an evil thing, encouraging our fat kids to give up their fatty foods and offering them alternatives......surely she is a socialist scourge on America....
But, back to planned obsolescence.....have you heard of the death panels? It's a way of getting Americans to replace their old grandparents with newer models, with features currently available on the old models...
As I understand it, the 100-watt thing was/is only the beginning. Lower wattage bulbs are scheduled to be phased in over time.

Dinner's almost ready and I'm too lazy to look for a link right now.

This apartment uses florescent tubes for kitchen lighting. Old ones too, so it takes forever to get any light in there. If any bulb needed to be banned, it's those ****ing things.

Buy an electronic starter, it fires up the tubes with no delay. I have some and it works well. :)

there are also different brightness ratings.....Lowes has a display showing color/temperature ratings...go for the bright white..

I don't know about brightness but the spectrum of light is very important. I like "warm white" and the "traditional luminescent white" is irritating to me.

Nah, this place is a dump. I'd do that only if I cared enough to do so. I just keep the place clean so I can gtfo as quick as possible when the end of the lease pops up.

I would prefer quality. It costs just as much in the long run to keep buying crap as opposed to paying more for better made, quality products. I'm thinking American made in the 50s-80s before everything was mass produced as cheaply as possible in third world ****holes like China. Making products obsolete with the intention of needing them replaced quickly damages the environment by producing more toxic wastes and landfills.
