Re: Is Mitt Romney a Liberal?

His principles are not liberal or conservative. He is only a flip flopper of the extreme form, so he has no principles...

Re: Is Mitt Romney a Liberal?

Even Obama isn't liberal, at least gauging by how he's governed, so how in the world can Mitt Romney fall in that category? Romney might be a slightly less shade of bat**** than genuine loons like Santorum, but that doesn't make him liberal, not by a long stretch. Yeah, he's a flip flopper but it's more like his views alternate between right wing extremist and center-right, depending on what's need to win the most votes at a given moment.

As governor that meant mild health care reform, during the nomination it meant reinstating DADT, now it will mean opposing his own law as governor and who knows what else. His recent attempts to win the youth and Hispanic votes are particularly amusing. I'm more inclined to label him a soul-less automaton.

'People like me' are concerned patriots who have deep and serious questions about the direction of American society which caters to the corporate mentality over all else. There is a very dangerous move afoot to repeal the progress of the 20th century and it is led by right wingers calling themselves conservative, libertarians and tea party folk.

Perhaps you can take your pointed barbs aimed at me and flesh them out a bit and tell me which rich democrats I should be so concerned about repealing the 20th century?

Nothing seems low enough in political discourse today. My sense is that this falls to partisans who feel they do not have an argument to lift themselves up, so their method of moving up the ladder of success is to pull their opponents down.

People need to call out the scoundrals, as I am now doing. Perhaps then we can get back to a true debate of ideas.
I also believe in calling out those who need to be called out. And that is what I am doing with Romney and his supporters.

We are on the cusp at this time in history. It reminds me a great deal of a chapter in the US History book I used to teach from which labeled the era of the 1850's as The Failure Of The Politicians. And we know what the result of that was.

Wanting to see America remain great for all its people seems to be something to be mocked and derided by some here. Fine. We obviously have very very different visions of what America is and who the American people are.

I would ask that all read the excellent work by William R. Shirer- THE RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH. Shirer was the NY Times reporter in Germany for a long time and his book does a thorough and insightful job in chronicling the rise of nazism in Germany. One cannot help but read it and compare far too many similarities between what is happening in the USA today.

As the elf queen Galadriel said in LORD OF THE RINGS, we are balanced on the edge of a knife. Stray and we could fail as a nation and as a people. I would hope we can successfully find a way to neither cut ourselves in half nor fall into oblivion.

And Washnut - exposing the agenda of the far right wing is engaging in a true debate of ideas. Perhaps they are ideas you simply do not want exposed?

Re: Is Mitt Romney a Liberal?

Conservative/Liberal are subjective terms and totally arbitrary.

A conservative in 1988 Russia is much different from a Conservative in Modern day US which is much different from a conservative from 1780 Paris which is much different from a Conservative in 1960's Germany.

Conservative/liberals are silly distinctions in my opinion.

I believe that it's about Right and Wrong. When the voters make the Wrong choice things need to be corrected.
And I take it you are the abiter of what is right or wrong ... I thank God everyday that people as dilussional and anti-social as you are few and far between.
