Public tax payer funded teachers should not have their evaluations released to anyone

I think anyone should be able to make request public tax payer funded teacher's evaluations.Teachers are tax payer funded employees. As the people who pay their wages we should be allowed to see their performance evaluations.

It looks like even a broken clock can be right.

Mayor Bloomberg says restricting release of teacher evaluations is an outrage - NY Daily News
ALBANY — A plan to restrict the release of teacher evaluations is an “outrage” and would be a major cave to the unions, Mayor Bloomberg declared Friday.

“We have to run the system for the kids, not for the teachers,” he said on his weekly radio show.

The Daily News has reported the unions were speaking with Gov. Cuomo about a way to limit the release of evaluations to just parents. A

union plan would require parents to meet with principals to discuss the ratings without taking notes.

snip...

Bloomberg argued that the union plan “is designed deliberately to keep the average parent that we have in this city from ever seeing an evaluation.”

Many working parents won’t have the time to schedule a meeting with the principal, he said.

“It’s just unworkable.

I feel that a face to face meeting is rather unnecessary, that being said the instructors name and corresponding evaluation should only be available to the parents of the children who are taught by said instructor. Making them available to the general public as a whole would be foolish in my opinion, seeing as there is already more than enough theatrics surrounding discussions of the public school system in general in the present era.

As I'm a huge fan of the FOIA, release it to anyone for any reason.

Only their bosses. Job performance evaluations should not be public.

If I had a child, I'd personally like to know the integrity and capability of someone who has a large influence in their behavior and education.

This could easily get out of hand. Defense contractor employees could have their evaluations made public, or anyone accepting public money. We have some ****ty teachers out there, but let's not go crazy. I'd rather seem them booted for incompetence.

Yeah, I can see issues with this. If we allow that then it makes sense that ALL public employees should have their evaluations made public. That includes those of us in the military. I understand the sentiment behind it, but I see more bad then good coming from it.

Righties always seem to have such a hard on for teachers... Did you guys have a rough time in school or what?

As a taxpayer paying their wages I should have something available to me that shows me how well or how poor they are doing.

And yes, I see no problem applying this to ALL public employee's. Even the ones in the military. It doesn't need to be detailed. The only information that should be released is what infractions they got, what those infractions were for and how well they are doing on a scale of 1-10. The only exception to this that I would have is for military personnel if the infractions they recieved came about due to classified OPs. In this case the infractions don't have to be released...just that they got them.

This might make people more aware of what they are doing and consider their actions more closely.

I would make school evaluations public. But yes, individual evaluations should be used for fitness reports, and hiring/firing/promotion issues. No need for parents to start suing the school because little johnny got the second best science teacher.

Yes, but the correct solution to that is to give administrators the ability to fire someone too unethical or incompetent to do the job well.

So you are saying employers do not have the right to see the job performance evaluations of their employees? Seeing how we the tax payers are the employers of these PUBLIC school teachers, then they work for us,which makes us their bosses.

I remember a TWILIGHT ZONE episode where some humans were put into a very nice home to live and it turned out to be some sort of alien zoo attraction. The aliens would come and stare at them and they had no private life of any kind.

Rod Serling was a prophet.

What nonsense does this have to do with employers looking at the job evaluations of their employees?

Can we do the same for military, police, firefighters, politicians, etc.?

OH, absolutely school evaluations and performance should be available to the public.

We are not their employers, any more than we are not the employer of the mcDonalds worker who makes our food. The local school system is their employer.

I think at the very least parents should be allowed to see the most recent evaluations for the teachers assigned to their children. If I find out that Johnny's teacher has a hard time with discipline then I can try to compensate for that by working with Johnny outside of school. If I find out that Johnny's teacher had the lowest math test scores on last year's STAR test then I can compensate for that by working with Johnny on his math in preparation for that test.

For me, it isn't about "OMG, GIVE MY CHILD THE #1 TEACHER!". It's about making sure that I'm compensating for the natural weaknesses that exist in all of us (as best I can), but supplementing my child's education where the teacher isn't as strong.

I am a HUGE advocate for completely redesigning our education system and I am well aware that there are far too many (even if it's a small portion, it's always too many) "bad" teachers who aren't teaching for the right reasons.....but my interest in evaluations has nothing to do with penalizing teachers or harassing the administrators to hire them. It's about making sure my child is receiving the most balanced educational experience possible. I need to know where my focuses should be when my child comes home from school, and evaluations of the teacher and my child's progress are two good ways of making sure I focus correctly.

Righties always seem to have such a hard on for teachers... Did you guys have a rough time in school or what?

I'm not a righty but my public schooling was a joke. I realized just how bad it was when I went to college. And I was on the honor role in high school!

As a parent paying taxes I should be able to know if the school I want to send my son to is filled with sh1tty teachers.

What good would that do? Knowing that teacher X is rated at 6 (on a scale of 1 to 10) tells you NOTHING, as you still have 1) no idea what that 6 means, 2) no way of changing your kids teacher from teacher X's class (in that school) and 3) no idea if that school has any teacher's better/worse than teacher X (teaching that grade level).

What is needed, IMHO, is to know how the students, that have actually been taught by teacher X, do on a standardized evaluation test compared with students, in that same school and at the same grade level, that were NOT taught by teacher X did. After all, it does not matter what the administration or "peer teachers" THINK of the performance of teacher X, what matters, IMHO, is the effect teacher X had on the education imparted to their students compared to the peers of those students.

Only knowing if those students actually taught by tearcher X did better, worse or the same as SIMILAR students that were not taught by teacher X is likely to be of value. If you had THAT information, then you would have a better feel for which teachers are "better" than their peers AT THAT SCHOOL. Obviously a third grade teacher in a more affluent district is going to have an easier class to teach, than a third grade teacher in a poor or heavily non-english speaking area, and thus may receive a better "evaluation" by their administration, but if you can compare those teachers only to those other teachers WITHIN THEIR ASSIGNED ENVIRONMENTS, then much of those "other factors" make much less difference.

The bottom line is that you, and all of the other parents, want to keep the better teachers (by paying them more), help improve the average teachers (by ???) and get rid of the worst teachers (by paying them less or simply dismissing them). Teacher performance can only be truely evaluated as it applies to the end results; how much did that teacher help educate their assigned students, all else is simply politics, personalities or smoke and mirrors, controlled by the "in crowd" that now allows our schools to cost more yet produce less, nearly every year.

False analogy. One is about public workers. The other is about a private company.

I think its should be released in general terms, "average teacher performance for x grade or department".

Being a public worker does not make you their employee. In the same way you should not be able to access my military record from when I served, nor my evaluations from that time, you should not be able to do that with teachers. If you have an issue with a teachers performance, you should go to their boss. As cp said(and it is scarey when he and I agree), those administrators should have more power to discipline and dismiss.

Yes, but the correct solution to that is to give administrators the ability to fire someone too unethical or incompetent to do the job well.

I would rather see the evaluations of the administration down to the principal level, and give them the right to run the school as they see fit, including the right to fire the teachers.

You are correct, if the administrator is doing their job, the poor teachers would be long gone.

But the LAW in some cases, and the union "contract" in other cases, makes this option impossible; to hold someone accountable, they first must REALLY be put in charge, something that we the sheeple have, so far, not done. We keep placing more layers of gov't in the "loop". Teachers now are likely STATE gov't employees. If funding and control were returned to the local school district level, only then could this be done. As it stands now, we have little direct local control, as we keep insisting on more FEDERAL funding, yet seem SHOCKED when that begets more FEDERAL control.
