What should be the US National Anthem?

Well, that was why I waited until jp or one of the others suggesting it actually put forth the VERSION they wanted.

The one you typically hear elementry school kids singing leaves some verses off that are preset in other versions. Specifically, some of the more politically motivated verses highlighting the communists leanings of the arthor which cut more to the heart of the intent behind a song that was originally a critical response to "God Bless America".

Does it automatically mean it'd be a bad anthem? Not at all. But to suggest there's nothing controversial about it comparitive to the SSB, God Bless America, or America the Beautiful is ridiculous.

That's what I'm saying. It's not a bad song, but it's not without controversy, either. People are going to be "offended" no matter what you do.

True that, but anyone can sing it. Most everyone knows it.
How many people know more than one verse of the SSB? :peace

Heh.

I didn't even know there WAS more than one verse, til now.

No one ever sings anything but the first at public functions, so far as I've seen.
The Star-Spangled Banner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
O say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Not really surprised though, the other lines don't seem as catchy to me - but then, that may be because I haven't heard or seen them before.

Edit: Also, people probably wouldn't like to sit through the whole thing, given it's length...especially these days...I mean it took me like 3 seconds to look up something on the interwebs...

How many people today even know that This Land is Your Land exists? I'm with others here, that we may as well pick something that's supposed to piss people off. My vote is for To Arms in Dixie.
