This land belongs to you & me was/is how Native people view the earth. There is no mention of any ethnicity in the song.
I'm an atheist & I see steeples every day, don't bother me none.. I don't evangilize my lack of religian. Keep religian out of politics & don't come knockin' at my door & I'm cool with it.

Their view was that it doesn't belong to anyone, and since it would mostly be the descendants of colonists singing the song, I think you get my point. There's also a reason why I said extremist atheists.

War is a necessity at times, but never something to be glorified, IMO. Its just the way I was raised.

[ As I was out walking, I saw a sign there,
& on that sing it said No Trespassing,
But on the other side, it didn't say nothing,
that side was made for you & me.

This land is your land, this land is my land,
From California to the New York Island,
From the red wood forest to the Gulf stream waters,
This Land is made fore you & me.

Re: What should be the US National Anthem?

All the other credible songs given as suggestions are incredibly boring. I have always been inspired by the ssb, both the music and lyrics. I have frequently commented how our anthem is far better than any I have heard from other nations.

How can you not have chills on "Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"? The question has always had a double meaning for me:
    1. Are we still free from foreign rule
    2. Have we been vigilant in preserving and strengthening our freedom, or have we let it degrade?

I know that the second is not likely the intended meaning, but the music that goes with the line seems to invite a broader contemplation.

The lyrics throughout this song successfully invoke through artful imagery feelings of pride in our ideals and courage; rather than unartfully making the attempt, or worse attempting to describe how we should feel.

War is necessary at times to reassert liberty, there is nothing wrong in glorifying the courage to live up to that necessity. This is what this song glorifies, not war itself. That distinction is significant. It would be a good thing if more people across the world would have that kind of courage. This is my final reason for wanting to keep it: It is a reminder to us as to which side we should be taking with regard to conflicts where liberty is a factor, even though we don't always live up to it.
You can never be safe from a government that can keep you completely safe from each other and the world. You must choose.

People asked what could be offensive about "This land is your land"? Depends which version. Not surprising that two of the people suggesting the song want the version that was clearly:

    1) Politically motivated
    2) Advocates against private property
    3) With the additional line, the vauge implication of the "this land is your land, this land is my land" theme being more literalistic communal in nature rather than metaphorically suggesting simple "togetherness"

All of which could offend some people.

As previously stated...just about any song you pick can be an offensive choice to some people. Thanks jpevans for highlighting the version I figured, but couldn't know for sure, he and Haymarket apparently prefer which best highlights that point.

People would still take issue with it. Zyphlin also pointed out another group that this would piss off that I didn't even think about: property owners. The notion of the land being "made" would also piss off extremist atheists as well, since it implies a god.

I say keep the Star Spangled Banner. There's no point in changing it.

Well, that was why I waited until jp or one of the others suggesting it actually put forth the VERSION they wanted.

The one you typically hear elementry school kids singing leaves some verses off that are preset in other versions. Specifically, some of the more politically motivated verses highlighting the communists leanings of the arthor which cut more to the heart of the intent behind a song that was originally a critical response to "God Bless America".

Does it automatically mean it'd be a bad anthem? Not at all. But to suggest there's nothing controversial about it comparitive to the SSB, God Bless America, or America the Beautiful is ridiculous.
