Cheering Mom Arrested At Graduation - Right Or Wrong

I believe this mother

Having fun has been against the law for quite some time now. It's a ****ing shame. I got popped for playing my guitar too loud, with a Mariachi band, in Fairield California, in 1987. $5 Bens for the lawyer, case dismissed.

This woman was experiencing elation is in her own way. Can't have that!

And if the families of the students unfortunate enough to follow her daughter don't get to hear their students name called, well that's just too bad for them, huh? Rudeness and selfishness seems to be an epidemic these days. As long as I can grab the spotlight, to hell with everybody else. Sad.

i keep seeing "could not hear their own family member's name being called" as being the reason for objecting to the parents' over the top celebration

would you not have recognized your own kid walking across the runway to receive the diploma without that verbal introduction? so, you did not hear some stranger speak their name into the microphone. such a massive loss [/s]

i am certainly not condoning stupid people acting the fool at graduations. fortunately, did not see this at the university level here, but those low rent families over-react as if they have never been to one before. and from the looks of them, that is quite possibly the reality. let them enjoy their all too rare moments of celebration and be glad they are not going home with you

so, yes, arresting her was excessive - unless she was ignoring security's efforts to prevent her from going onto the floor with the students

when my youngest graduated from HS five years ago there was one of these families shouting excessively and carrying on. and the man behind them started throwing punches. arrests then all around. (yep, i live in the south ... bet you already guessed that - or maybe DE-troit)

A few of us at my graduation last year were told to cheer louder for our friends as they walked across stage before us.(The PO department was small, and a lot of us were friends and hung out a lot outside of class.)

"...officers walked her across the Florence Civic Center, where the graduation ceremony was being held, in full view of everyone."

No one here has any reason to feel proud. The graduation became a spectacle for all concerned, except the graduates who's work and celebration was overshadowed by the woman and the police. Poor police procedure here, they should have waited a reasonable time for the overzealous mother to come off the stage.

now come on, this woman wasn't hurting anybody. I can't believe she got arrested. That's outrageous - she can't have been the only one cheering. People are too obssessed with laws and discipline these days and I just think everyone really needs to ease up.

You don't scream and holler at weddings, Christenings, funerals nor in movie theaters.. You don't scream and holler in lecture halls or in church or in school..

The woman is an idiot.

Yep I agree. Like I said, it's all about self-control. One can not let the horses run wild in life.

Couldn't they just turn up the microphone so that you could hear the names over the ruckus?

IMO, not really a viable solution.

Did you see the video I posted? That group of parents actually drowned out a frickin MARCHING BAND.

Great. So graduation ceremonies become a battle of the noise makers ending up in rock-concert volumes?

How about this - hoot and holler at the graduation party you throw for your child.

Let the formal ceremony for ALL, be enjoyed by ALL, with decorum and class.

You can show enthusiasm for your child in ways that don't offend others around you.

agreed, all around
but do we now arrest people for being crass?
because of our foolish policies we how have 5% of the world's population but 25% of the world's prison population
we shouldn't make such stupidity even more lopsided

I stated earlier I thought the arrest was over-the-top.

I agree with removing those people, and fines if the level of obnoxious is extraordinary.

Definitely remove these people from the audience, take them away.

And I throughly detest these loud obnoxious people - but arrest is not a good thing. Beatings or tasering? Maybe... fines? Perhaps if the circumstances warrant. Arrest? No....

SC mom busted at kid's graduation: 'I cheered for my baby and I got the cuffs' - U.S. News <-- clicky

Did the authorities act accordingly?
Is this really an arrest-worthy offense?
Was the mother out of line?
Did she deserve to be arrested?

Are you in favor of this kind of police action?
Do you support the arrest of this mother?

What the hell is this country coming to? First a kid can't get his diploma because other people cheered to loudly for him and now this mother can't cheer for her daughter. Freaking stupid.

And I certainly don't agree that a graduation ceremony should ever be considered "solemn" occasion. A funeral is a solemn occasion. A graduation ceremony? That's cause for celebration.

If you're offended by someone else showing enthusiasm for their child graduating then you have problems. People do have a right to free speech so long as it does not endanger anyone else. And a person cheering for thier kid graduating certainly does not fall under that purview.

You however do not have a right to not be offended.

Ummm...

I suppose you don't mind the obnoxious people a couple of rows down in the movie theater who insist on having a party during the film?

Apples and oranges. One is a privately owned buisness, the other is a public school holding a public ceremony.

But to answer your question, yeah I would get upset. However if the owner of that privately held theatre allows it I certainly am not going to gainsay them. I just won't come back to there.
