Yet it still caught on and was used by the Dems. Still is, though not as commonly.

I think negative ads have value. I want and need to hear if the other candidate is being dishonest. I want and need to hear the failures and inconsistencies of the other candidate. I wouldn't blindly believe said negative information, but it gives me a jump-start to know where to do my own research so that I can verify for myself. The other candidate certainly isn't going to volunteer that kind of information.

In moderation. I don't want or need constant negative ads. A candidate that balances negative ads with positive ads is preferable and reflects well on said candidate.

    Another oxymoron....a fair ad.
no, I did not watch it, nor will I.
    IMO, advertisements are propaganda.
    Politics are bloodless war.......
No wonder so few are willing to participate in either....
    And no-one "gets" the message....

I've always thought that for people to say "politics are dirty and if you don't play the game you can't win" is a big cop out. You don't have to be a saint, nor a crumb-bum either.
Can you think of any politicians, specifically that ran for president, that did not cross that line, that never threw mud, that won?

If someone does something rotten and after being called on it says, "well they did it first" that doesn't excuse them from culpability.
    True.

It's kind of funny. This was alright, when other republican candidates were criticizing Romney for being and "Vulture Capitolist," but now the democrats replaying it back isn't okay? That's biting them in the butt. Sorry folks, but I don't think this is even close to "Swift Boat" tactics. And the republicans haven't really even started many negative ads yet. We'll see.

An ad, any ad, is specifically produced based upon a bias position to begin with. It is meant to persuade the viewer and can never be deemed "fair".

I know realistically politics is a game of appearances, not truth. They know perception is everything and project images that are patently false.

I believe it's fair to run ads showing an opponents missteps, failures or deficiencies but not to promote untruths, even if the other side does it. I'd rather see a candidate talk about their successes and proposals on the issues and differentiate why their solutions are better than there oppositions.

I guess you missed this ad that highlights the President's achievements:
