I see it as internalizing externalities, similar to what we do with business. Of course it needs to be within reasons, so its not a matter of people for people just because they exist.

true its also about buying votes and politicians giving the masses what they want without losing the masses' support by taxing them at an appropriate rate for what they are given

i would have never allowed the 16th amendment to become law and I believe that if taxes are raised everyone should suffer the same raise rather than one minority be saddled with it

You're right, we should all pay 99% income and capital gains tax.

Except with the poor, they'd all quit their jobs en mass as they're barely staying afloat as is. With Zuckerberg, he'd still be insanely wealthy, all for giving some nerds a place to waste their time pretending to keep in touch with people they can't be bothered to really keep in touch with. He's spawned a generation of barely literates and wannabe stalkers. I'd like a "No one except Zuckerberg should pay taxes" option.
