Toyota and Honda looks for quality all around; gm an ford will let some stuff slide. As for r&d the second biggest car manufacture in the world is in Georgetown ky as well as one of the biggest r&d firms
In cali both part of Toyota.

My Nissan 240 sx was pretty good.

Would General Motors Be Alive Today Without Government Help?

YES (please state how)
NO, the assets would be liquidated.

GM would have been better off to go through bankruptcy, they could have reorganized and got rid of union contracts that will bring them to their knees again. This massive tax payer bailout was about saving the union not GM.

You are correct I misspoke and wasn't clear enough in my blanket statement. I should have said normal bankruptcy without the gov bailout that had so many strings attached and where the gov became a controlling entity in GM. The settlement became biased in favor of UAW members due to gov picking winners and losers in the bankruptcy process which corrupted it. GM needed to get the UAW out or at least greatly reduce their influence and power, instead they basically became part owners in GM with increased power.

Let me just say this...Mitt Romneys campaign last week...stated QUOTE....Obama took Mitt Romenys idea to save General Motors...meaning it was romneys idea to bail them out...

I think that GM was "too big" to allow for a failure.
Far too many innocents would have been hurt - so who needs this ??
I also think that President Obama did the right thing.
And Romney would have done the same if free from the right wing tea bagging conservatives.

They would have been better off if they reorganized without government help.

GM should look toward Honda for reorganization tips (as mentioned in this video):

GM should have reorganized 50 -100 years ago, rather than living in the past.
Yes they can ( with an attitude change), learn from more advanced nations (Germany, Jappan, others ?)..And companies such as Toyota, Honda, even Saab..
But, of course, the ghost of Wilson is still around.
"what is good for GM is good for the nation"...
So, our government had to do the bail out...

Since there are plenty successful car companies, what would be the reason to restructure GM be?
Because the board and management must have thought they can continue to be competitive.

Why not sell the assets and be done with it and close shop altogether? What's the impetus to restructure?
Obviously, their debts did not exceed their cash, potential cash made from the sale of parts of the company, and probably a hundred or more other reasons.

It's pretty difficult to find individuals with the capital or credit(since banks weren't really loaning!) to purchase parts of the company. Yes...in a normal economy they could probably find individuals that wanted portions of the company but we're talking about a period in time when those that had the means to purchase or loan money were shoring up their own accounts.

In truth, I doubt very much if Obama used any of Romney's "ideas".
But that is not to say that his advisers have not done this.
And the bail-outs are an old idea anyway.
And its very debatable that the UAW is to blame.....I think this is anti-union propaganda from wealthy conservatives.
