So, NP, about those polls you claim are different in the real world...gunna show them or continue to hide?

...Yeah when Bush left unemployment was at about 5% now its 8.2% under Hussein Obama......you do the math......

seriously man?

are you really gonna just spew this garbage and not take any responsibility for it?

Of course he's not.It's all Obama's fault.

For someone whose supposedly spent so much time out at sea, you'd think that Comrade NP would know that since this thread of his is a fishing expedition,he'd of at least used the right bait.
Apparently all he wanted was everyone to complain that their hard times is all Obama's fault. He thinks people who are doing well are "out of touch with the real world".

So virtually everyone in this forum, especially libs are better off than they were 4 years ago. There are a million fewer jobs than their was 4 years ago, gas cost twice as much, house prices are off a cliff and we as a nation are 4 trillion more in debt. Apparently you people were living under a bridge 4 years ago if things are better now.

I forgot the unemployment numbers which would be way over 10% if not for tricky accounting schemes.

I make more money, my company is giving me greater benefits as I've met the 5 year mark with them, hours are plentiful (because the company is expanding at our location), got a house near the bottom of the housing crash (so I'm paying practically nothing for a 3 bed, 2.5 bath house, much less than the going rate for a 2 bed rental).

Some folks know what to do, to make their life better, regardless of the economy.

Yes, I'm better off than 3 years ago.

I'm a public school teacher whose pay has increased every year since I started working. I bought my house a couple years and and I'm on my way to paying off my student loans.

I've seen the "country on the wrong track" poll often over the years. It's been pretty consistent against the status-quo for years.

Putting aside my bias which some people can't do I will say no.

Hussein Obama and his administration froze all COLA raises so I could not keep up with inflation......Food prices at the grocery store have at least tripled.........Gas prices have doubled.........My stock portforlio is about where it was 3 years ago so I have only hold my own there..........There is total Cayous in the middle east with the threat of Nuclear War..........

Since Obama has been President the DOW has doubled, stocks have done great. You need to learn a little about the market. You are in the wrong stocks my Republican friend.

It is also not the qustion he asked.

um, you MUST be joking.

My 401k earned back every dime it lost during the recent crash, and has gained a good 15% since that.

cool-soon you will be a republican and against the massive proposed taxes on investment income

If you are or not explain in what way.

I am better off. My income is good, the company I work for and my job are stable, I just bought 7 acres in the virginia mountains, and the Republicans are in the process of nominating a pro-choice, pro-public health care, non-traditional Christian for President. Good times...

EDIT: And, like Thunder, my 401K has done great.

I can't think of any substantial way that my life would have been any different if Al Gore or John Kerry had been president from 2001-2008, rather than George Bush. I can't think of any substantial way that my life would be different today if John McCain had been president for the last three years, rather than Barack Obama. Maybe their priorities would have tangentially affected me in some barely-noticeable way, but in the grand scheme of things my life would be more or less the same.

Obama may be President of the United States, but YOU are President of Your Own Life. If you choose to wallow in misery every time a politician is elected whom you dislike, you're in for an unhappy life.

Best post here.

My life continues to improve along as I age. Every president in my life I have continued to improve in their term. Not about them but more that I have worked my butt off and never live beyond my means.

As you age your house becomes paid off and you no longer make car payments so things do improve naturally. I also believe if Romney gets elected I probably am not going to notice much difference in my personal life.

Well we have to help our OP devise his own talking points and questions as he clearly conflates them and does not realize where his results went wrong. :p

But it's more fun after he has screwed up.

so jealous of you. I'd love to own some land in Upstate NY.

I don't know what it may cost up there, but if you look around in certain areas of Virginia, you can get beautiful property for less than $10,000 an acre.

Perhaps we need to lower expectations.

I have friends who bemoan their financial state because they can't afford a 4th flat screen TV for their $250k home. They also have maxed out credit cards, over-sized vehicles with incredibly high monthly payments, and wear designer clothing. Why? Why is that the standard people are trying to live up to and why would it be bad if we lowered our expectations below that?

I was raised to believe that you leave everything behind when you die, so there's really little point in collecting expensive material crap at the detriment of your other responsibilities or ability to enjoy life. In other words, I don't need a Mercedes when a Ford Focus will do just fine. I don't need a 250k house just 'cause I got pre-approved for that amount. I don't need a flat screen in every room of my house. I don't need to go out and buy a better deck than my neighbor just to say I have it.

Our material expectations are ridiculous.

On a personal level I agree with you, I am kind of a minimalist myself. I bought new pickup in 94 that I justified by vowing to keep it 20 years, I am nearly there. Where I disagree with you is how you want to put your values on others and judge them on their life styles. As a financial conservative I believe live and let live, if someone wants to drive a Ford Focus that's fine, if they want a Rolls Royce thats fine too, your life your choice how to live it. Your post on the other hand seems very liberal in that you decide who is right who is wrong and what values people should have. Now that I have that off my chest, when I said we are in an era of lower expectations I was really referring to the fact that for the first time in American history the younger generation doesn't think they will do better than their parents, I find that kinda sad. My fault for not being more clear though, it's like I assume people know what I am thinking, LOL.

Agreed. I've read several studies on the things that actually make people happy, and the things that people THINK will make them happy but don't. To make a long story short, virtually all of these studies conclude that buying a bunch of stuff doesn't make people happy. What actually makes people happy is to spend their discretionary income on experiences - e.g. taking family vacations, visiting a nice new restaurant, going to the movies, trying a new hobby, or (especially) donating it to the less fortunate. Having those experiences is far more important than having new possessions. One of these researches made a great point, that the joy of having new stuff wears off quickly, because we adjust to it. But the thrill of a new experience actually gets BETTER once its over, because we only remember the highlights.

And that's the principle that I try to follow. I don't mind buying possessions when it's something I actually need or something I will actually use regularly...but I don't like wasting a lot of money buying expensive junk. For any material purchase worth more than $100, I try to ask myself if it will actually improve my life in some way. If the answer is no, then I shouldn't be wasting my money on it.

yeah, but if you don't have a house on the property, what do you do with the land?

It does have an old house on it which we have stayed in when we have gone up for a week. It is not fancy at all, but it will do for now, and we will put a small new house, maybe a modular home on it at some point in the future.

So your not even a little curious as to why the voters in DP are so out of touch with the real world?

They're out of touch because they're not voting the way you thought they would? You just want to run off on another rant about Obama and the poll isn't making it easy so you're insulting people who are voting the "wrong way".

Real mature.
