To make a long story short, virtually all of these studies conclude that buying a bunch of stuff doesn't make people happy. What actually makes people happy is to spend their discretionary income on experiences - e.g. taking family vacations, visiting a nice new restaurant, going to the movies, trying a new hobby, or (especially) donating it to the less fortunate. Having those experiences is far more important than having new possessions. One of these researches made a great point, that the joy of having new stuff wears off quickly, because we adjust to it. But the thrill of a new experience actually gets BETTER once its over, because we only remember the highlights.

And that's the principle that I try to follow. I don't mind buying possessions when it's something I actually need or something I will actually use regularly...but I don't like wasting a lot of money buying expensive junk. For any material purchase worth more than $100, I try to ask myself if it will actually improve my life in some way. If the answer is no, then I shouldn't be wasting my money on it.

    George said it best.

It does have an old house on it which we have stayed in when we have gone up for a week. It is not fancy at all, but it will do for now, and we will put a small new house, maybe a modular home on it at some point in the future.

They're out of touch because they're not voting the way you thought they would? You just want to run off on another rant about Obama and the poll isn't making it easy so you're insulting people who are voting the "wrong way".

Actually NP I have to hand it to you, you make me feel better about things, because now that I seriously thought about it things aren't as bad as they seem when you think about how you are doing individually.

In theory, some of those loopholes were understandable, but in practice they sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying ten percent of his salary, and that’s crazy." -Reagan

I love the NSA. It's like having a secret fan-base you will never see, but they're there, watching everything you write and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that I may be some person's only form of unconstitutional entertainment one night.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers
