Is it almost three years, already? It seems like yesterday. How come time related to children seems to go faster than other time? I still can't get over the fact that my son's one now. Was the explanation of this phenomenon in Einstein's theory of relativity and somehow I missed it?

yeah, it flies. It is amazing!

Overall, we are better off. My Daughter is a college senior. Hubby has been at current job about 4 years now (so he has a bit of seniority). I'm retired from my many long employment years, but did work several months last year (temping). I look after our farm and livestock every day. Summer is coming and we've got some camping plans. It's all good.

You are correct that you have to live in the now and adjust to things as they are and we are in a period of lowered expectations so people think they are doing well if they aren't losing ground. If you bother to look at this site though you will see in raw detail how bad this economy has become over the last 3 years and you will see if we don't change the way things are done in DC lowered expectations will be around for a very long time. With numbers like this there will be corresponding numbers of people that just can't make any progress and will in fact lose ground.

Perhaps we need to lower expectations.

I have friends who bemoan their financial state because they can't afford a 4th flat screen TV for their $250k home. They also have maxed out credit cards, over-sized vehicles with incredibly high monthly payments, and wear designer clothing. Why? Why is that the standard people are trying to live up to and why would it be bad if we lowered our expectations below that?

I was raised to believe that you leave everything behind when you die, so there's really little point in collecting expensive material crap at the detriment of your other responsibilities or ability to enjoy life. In other words, I don't need a Mercedes when a Ford Focus will do just fine. I don't need a 250k house just 'cause I got pre-approved for that amount. I don't need a flat screen in every room of my house. I don't need to go out and buy a better deck than my neighbor just to say I have it.

    Our material expectations are ridiculous.

I think we're loads better off at my house than we were 3 years ago. Maybe we're just lucky? the only negative I've noticed is higher gasoline prices.

Unless your life circumstances are somewhat unusual (e.g. you're chronically on government assistance, or you're in prison, etc) then the direct impact that any particular politician or group of politicians has on your life is approximately nil. I might - *might* - grant you that perhaps 5% of the variability in your life circumstances is a result of specific people being in charge of the government. The other 95% of it is on you. A qualified person can prosper even in tough economic times, and a disaffected person will have trouble even in good economic times.

When I look back over the course of my life, it has its share of ups and downs. But virtually ALL of the ups and downs are related to my personal circumstances, not politics. I don't think of my own life in terms of who was president when I was 16 or 21 or 27...I don't know of anyone who does.
