Maybe everyone should be concerned in general about the rising cost of copper and other mined ores and minerals that we rely on for many things in life - and then figure out how to bring it down.

If they focused on the source of the issue they'd actually get somewhere. . . simply tyring to get rid of the penny won't make copper cheaper

We are way past the age of pennies. They are a pita.

If you're not going to do a real poll, I'm not even going to bother with the thread.

Give the guy some slack...he might not know how to make one...or didnt realize it...

I dont care either way really...as long as all the prices ending in 99 go to 95....im good <grin>

That is penny wise pound foolish. Just keep a donation box at the cash counter and all the pennies can go to charity.

pennies are made out of zinc since 1982, Problem is whatever you make them out of they will still cost more than they are worth. As time and inflation continue to fly by they will be worth less and less and cost more and more, At some point they will have to go. Looks like Canada has reached that point. May take the US longer but eventually they will have to do something.

Or we could go the way the military did in Iraq. When the transport of coins into theater for post exchanges became to expensive, they switched to "pogs". Little cardboard circles that stated their worth with a picture of something military on it. We could go that way with the pogs looking the same as the original coin.

Hah! I forgot about all of those: I have a huge stash, too.

Most financial transactions these days are electronic which are always down to the penny or even fractions of pennies in certain cases, thus the impact of not having physical pennies would be lessened.

So, sure, lets do it.

somewhere i cant remember i have about 150 dollars worth of aafes tokens.there were two reasons they used them, one was because soldiers got tired of carrying metal coins everywhere and two was because when the coins would fall out of soldiers pockets the locals would try and kill eachother to pick them up,i mean literally they would swing shovels at eachothers heads over a quarter.

No - foremost: coins are noisy.

Just like dogtags are noisy.

So they sleeve dogtags and used paper for coins.

another good point, noisey coins are definately bad when noise discipline is in order.

No, we shouldn't get rid of pennies.

Rather, we should make them out of a cheaper material than copper.

they havent been made of copper since ending the gold standard. since copper was a precious metal theren was no need for pure copper so the mints have used zinc with a copper plating, though now even zinc is too expensive.

maybe we should do like we did in ww2,make pennies out of steel like we did then when copper was needed for the war effort.

They accidentally made a few 1943 pennies out of copper and few 1944 pennies made out of zinc coated steel. Both are a extremely valuable.

As already mentioned they are not made from copper but even if they go to steel the problem will remain. They cost too much to produce vs their value. You may gain a few more years but either you get rid of them or revalue the money so a penny is now worth a nickel. Unfortunately inflation happens and pennies will have to eventually be sacrificed.
