We did suck at the "policing" in the beginning. I went back in 2007 for a year on an advisor team to an Iraqi Army battalion. I couldn't believe the differences made. The point is, your assumption that the humanitarian efforts didn't work is wrong. It did work and that's why OIF was a success. Like I said, we shouldn't have been there. But we were. And we were allowed to do our job unlike what we're doing in Afghanistan. Not to derail this thread. If we went into Syria, it would OEF part 2. NATO in charge, weak tactical decisions by PC Generals, and more floundering about for years on end. No thanks.
yeah, I'll admit, I'm torn on whether it's the ROE's or the pre-announced withdrawal timeline that screws us more in Afghanistan. I tend to suspect that the first is more infuriating, and the second is more damaging.

It sounds like there's not a lot of support just now for the idea of going to war. Good. Maybe one good thing did come out of a decade long war in Iraq and Afganistan.

Let's hope the anti war sentiment lasts this time. Last time around, we forgot pretty quickly.

    **** NO!

Jesus we shouldn't even be in Iraq! WTF. When we are out of our multi TRILLION dollar debt, our infrastructure has better than a D- rating, etc etc then we could talk about humanitarian intervention. Until then **** no.

Maybe, but ONLY if we withdraw from everywhere else.

We strayed from the methods that brought us success in the past. It worked so much better when we would have the CIA install dictators friendly to US interests.

    Where did that work?

I don't see how that relates... we are spending money that we don't have for wars that don't concern us. Once we secure "us" then we can help "them".

A: cluster bomb munitions are pretty cheap, and we have lots because we don't generally use them.

B: what do you think the effect on the deficit would be if Islamist nutjobs get their hands on Syrian chemical weaponry?
