The part that worries me is military action that is not for defending the USA.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

It was, and that's why we're in Afghanistan.

Yeah, we were attacked by people who planned their attack in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, so that's naturally why we invaded the country and overthrew the Taliban. That was in 2001 and was completed before our country rang in the New Year in 2002. It's irrelevant to today.

You may disagree with the idea of trying to build a self-sustaining democracy in Afghanistan, but that doesn't make it irrelevant.

I have very traditional values, including the belief in men representing and protecting their loved ones. I am also a very logical thinker. Thus, especially in a war, people should apply their strengths. I would be willing to defend my country in a war, but would serve best as a military strategist.

No, the mission was to break up Al Qaeda. The Taliban were asked to join us in that mission more than once before we invaded. It wasn't until last year that we completed the mission and shortly afterward we started to withdraw. It's a lot of troops and equipment with very poor supply routes. It's going to take time to get everything and everyone safely out.

No, I just disagree with pumping tons of money into a corrupt, tribal people who don't believe in a centralized government. When we announced we would have a partnership through at least 2014, I swear, if you listened closely you could probably hear the sounds of Russian laughter. Be that as it may, "trying to build a self-sustaining democracy in Afghanistan" has nothing to do with "defending the USA."
