That's a broad-topic: what sense are we defending ourselves? Foreign or domestic enemy? Is our government fully functioning or are we falling apart?

Countless scenarios here. . . overall I support defending ourselves or others when it's warrented: not just when it's temporarily beneficial or can be perceived as warrented sometimes.

Don't know, we'll see. I guess I meant defending US soil from foreign invasion.
You're right, it's broad-topic because participating in NATO's bombing campaign in some unknown country can be viewed as "defending US interest" too.

If we're talking actual defense, then I my answer is yes, gladly. I take defense to mean a situation in which our national sovereignty, or existence, is threatened.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

For defensive purposes on the homeland, absolutely and without question.

For defense of a US interest abroad, maybe.

    For offensive purposes, probably not.

I suppose it's a given since I'm on active duty. In 5 years when I'm retired, I'd still take up arms in a "Red Dawn" scenario.

I actually have dreams that we're invaded by the Chinese and I'm hiding out in sewers in a guerrila campaign against them. It's really weird.

I never once bought into the line that our soldier were "fighting for America" in Iraq.

Doesn't mean I didn't support them. They're my country men and country women, of course I support THEM. Just not the cause they were duped... er, ummm... told they were fighting for.

It's the voters that were duped....as a soldier your job it to fight where you're Democratically elected President and Congress tell you to.

I don't disagree with that, but that only applies to soldiers who were already in. It doesn't apply to those who enlisted afterward.

I'm sure some still would have agreed with the overall cause and joined anyway. No doubt. There was still a lot of not-so-subtle mis-patriotic spin going on.
