Those who in anyway appeared different than one's own kind were to be feared and defended against possible encroachment. This was the genesis of what we now deem "racism" and it remains with us to this very day, and will continue to haunt us for as long as we are human in any contemporary understanding of what it means to be human.
That is exactly what I suspect to be the case. I don't think racism is so much taught as it is "unlearned" through experience and teaching. It's not just race, but anything that we see as a difference between ourselves and *others*. I can remember when I was a small child, being afraid of the first black person I recall seeing. My mother had to teach me that the difference was in skin color, and that we are all the same on the inside. I was about three years old at the time. Unfortunately, some kids don't have parents who will teach them these things, so the fearful behavior is allowed to grow into hatred.

I can't think of anyone whom I hate. There are people that I don't want to hang out with, because they are jerks, but hatred is something that I would reserve only for someone who tried to harm me or mine personally.

I think if you have Liberals like Sharpton and Jackson always playing the race card sadly racism will never completely go away................

The prevalence and continuation of racism in modern-day society has absolutely nothing to do with Liberal civil rights activists, nor does it have much to do with playing the race card in general; the question actually had more to do with whether or not racism is a fundamental aspect of human nature.

    Realistically, probably not.

Certainly not the underlying cause of racism - human tendency to stereotype and judge individuals based on appearance. That will never go away. Unfortunately prejudice is a survival tool ingrained into our cognitive function through millions of years of evolution.

That isn't to say it's not a bad thing or that we shouldn't/can't try to limit its impact.

    UnderstandingPrejudice.org: Implicit Association Test

interesting little test that supposedly identifies your level of subconscious racism.

Since when was the existence of racism across the entire national community dependent on the leaders of the Democratic Party?

    Damn, subconscious racial feelings.

Racism will never completely end, but it will diminish greatly as racial minorities start to fit in more evenly across different socio-economic classes. That won't end our problems though, since people will just find different ways to hate on each other. Overt racism will be replaced with different forms of classism, in my opinion. In a lot of ways, racism is already on the decline in the U.S. But rich people still hate on poor people--even if they are of the same race.

To me, this has always been the big trick--rich people hate poor people and need a reason to turn them against one another--Race has always been the easiest way to do that. If poor whites think of themselves as "white", then they won't even notice that they are being treated as second-class citizens so long as blacks and other minorities are threated like third-class citizens. Poor whites think of themselves as really being part of the same history as rich whites and so see themselves as somehow different than poor blacks--even though they've been oppressed, they don't think of it that way as long as they get to vent their frustrations out on minorities. To a certain extent--in the older generation--this kind of thing hasn't changed.

Young folks these days get it, though. Poor whites and poor blacks live together in many places in the U.S., particularly in rural and suburban areas. Those kids grow up with the same struggles and stigmas and will end up generating an entirely different kind of culture--a hybrid culture full of little beige babies that will inevitably think of race in ways that are very different than people have in the past.
