Is the nobel peace prize a joke?

Yassar Arafat won one. Obama won one before doing anything. Gandhi never won one.

I have to admit that I lost any respect I might have had for the organization when they handed it to a terrorist. If that was a joke, it was certainly a bad one.

Looking over it's entire history, I think it's a worthy prize mostly given to worthy people. Lots of really amazing people have earned money to further their projects or campaigns. I think a lot of wonderful humanitarian work been furthered by the Nobel fund by and large. Yeah, the committee went totally political went in 2008 when it gave BO the prize. And, sure, maybe Yassar Arafat wasn't a great choice, either (don't harp on me about Arafat; I don't know much about Palestine/Israel).

But looking through all the winners since 1901, I can't help overlook a few miscalculations and see the bigger picture. The Nobel prize is a pretty good thing, I'd say.

I'm expecting some pretty bitter comments regarding this issue...

I agree with RM. The Nobel Peace Prize has, I think, gotten it right more often than it hasn't. I think it's biggest mistake was Obama in doing it before he had a chance to prove himself worthy, but I can understand why they did it. When he was running for president, he wasn't just affecting many Americans, he really was affecting many people throughout the world. Hopefully, they won't jump the gun like that again.

I agree. They may not have a 100% success rate, but there are some amazing people on that list. Note Norman Borlaug in 1970. As for Yasser Arafat, did anyone notice that Yitzhak Rabin also received one that year? Think maybe it was a gesture rooted in mutuality to help the peace process, and recognition for work they had done together? It's almost like the Nobel committee has a take on current events. Who'd a thunk?

It is a joke now, but at one time it may have not been.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

That's how I feel - but I've noted quite a few recipients in the past that were unworthy - like hitler

It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now.

In a country that, not even a half-century ago, allowed blacks to be segregated from whites.

Our country has a long sad history of violent bigotry and mistreatment of minorities, especially blacks.

His accomplishment of winning a presidential election is major. We've finally caught up to the 20th Century.

    Ghandi should have one.

Hitler never won a Nobel prize. He was nominated by a Swedish parliament member. The nomination was withdrawn February 1939.

That does not speak to his actions, though. Plenty of world leaders have broken barriers equally, if not far more impressive, than Obama's.
