    Personal Property Taxes

Do you pay the volunteer portion of your personal property taxes each year?

Just curious as to how many do and don't.

    What is this ???
This seems to be something that cannot be...if paying a tax was voluntary, the revenues would drop by 99% !

I don't think every state has volunteer (maybe they do) - we do. . . it's usually an extra $60.00 or something. It goes to certain measures that I really support such as homes for abused children and such - so I pay that.

IIRC every level of government has a voluntary additional tax column, could be wrong on that. What I think changes is the allocation of the voluntary taxes, some I think go into the general fund and others go to specific NGOs or otherwise directed. Maybe a CPA could clarify that though. That said I am already against property taxes as it creates a "lien holder" situation rather than a property owner one and I cannot support any further taxation in that direction.

I don't believe Oklahoma has that, if it does we don't pay it. We give directly to the charities we like.

Could be. I'm sure they have a voluntary option somewhere but there may not be a dedicated column, I haven't seen a single treasury personally that would turn away more tax money.

Nothing voluntary about New York property taxes. They keep going up to support pay raises and retirements of the bloated government work forces. It's time to start some actions to reduce the property taxes. You know what rolls downhill and that is where property taxpayers reside.

This post isn't about property taxes (as in real estate taxes). It's about Personal Property taxes. That's a different animal.

Illinois used to have that . . . and I think many people didn't even file it . . . or just threw a few bucks at it and forgot about it. They've since discontinued it.

It's a ridiculous tax. Just another way to get revenue.

I think I would feel obligated to give a small sum, but nothing significant. Like another poster said, I prefer to direct my own giving.

I don't even know what a "volunteer" portion of property taxes is. I get a bill each year, and I pay it- begrudgingly.
