Absolutely.

Legalize prostitution, but criminalize pimping.

My words exactly. :)

But most likely it won't happen because the power hungry don't want people to be free. They would tax them and jail them instead.

Since the topic of legalizing marijuana came up, we should discuss another "illegal" activity...

Should prostitution be legal?

Is prostitution legal for medical reasons in any jurisdiction? 'Cuz that would be awesome.

Seriously, though, I think prostitution should be legal. Why the hell not? If it's regulated by the government, it's safer and healthier for everyone involved. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Until recently, disability programmes in the Netherlands included a stipend for hiring prostitutes on account of the loneliness and isolation that many disabled people deal with. The idea was too liberal even for the Dutch and only lasted for a few years.

All sex between consenting adults should be legal. Human sexuality should be legalized instead of oppressed.

I'm entirely fine with prostitution being legalized and regulated by the government. After all, sex is something entirely natural, unlike drug use. I have no problem with people being compensated for providing sex to adults willing to pay for it, so long as the transaction is honest, voluntary, legal and clean.

Prostitution should not be legal, but not for the reasons you added to the poll option.

Blackmail.

Yes, blackmailing should be legal. If you don't want people to find out you touch children, don't touch children.

If someone finds out and wants to charge you a fee for the service of keeping your secret, **** you don't touch children.

...or fraud or what/who you did in collage or as a kid or that discrete backroom deal or that night in the hotel in another country with the oh so discrete escort service or the camera behind the mirror at the BSDM parlor....

There isn't a word you've just written that's in any way relevant to the topic.

So what are YOUR reasons?
From a human rights perspective, there can never exist any such a relationship in which a man would purchase and own the body of a woman as a commodity.

Legalized prostitution greatly exacerbates underground sex-slave human trafficking. Most nations which legalized prostitution, re-banned it after experiencing this truth. The oldest records of prostitution were of slaves.

Your typical prostitute comes from an abused background, enters prostitution out of desperation and/or coercion (not free choice) and becomes trapped in a life of physical, sexual, emotional, and drug abuse. This is not the life of an independent and free adult choosing to perform a service for a fee. This is a life of being owned and abused.

Those are all your opinions. Legalizing and regulating it would clean up many of the things people don't like about it. We supposedly live in a free country, why shouldn't we let consenting adults do what they please?

Of course prostitution should be decriminalized.

Many countries thought that before, and were sadly.... disappointed...with reality.

Would you be interested in taking this discussion up a level with sources and structured arguments? If not, I'm perfectly ok with that, I have other things I can do.

The only argument I need is we should be staying out of people's bedroom and let consenting adults do what they want...

I agree. What he described was what happens with illegal prostitution. It does not describe what's happening with the legal brothels in Nevada. Those organizations don't get their workers from the human sex slave trade. They get them from willing applicants.

Yep, I think consenting adults should be able to do what they want so long as there isn't a demonstrable harm to society or other individuals. I can't think of any demonstrable harm to society or individuals that would come from legalizing prostitution. In fact, I think with regulation, it would be good for both.

Sketching road to go down and for other reasons not mentioned. If it would only come down to the statement of "staying out of people's bedroom of consenting adults."

Let's look at this differently, if you are in a profession that involves your bedroom as an office then you just opened the door to your office for Uncle Sam to look in on his taxable income, not your bedroom door anymore.

Also when addressing other issues such as unemployment, all unemployment then should be denied because it would be tough to prove that no one is willing to haves sex with you for money. The thing is that you can not collect unemployment if you turn down gainable employment. In other words you would have the government now in some control of what you do with your body. Slippery slope folks that's all.

  • It's a parked car in a lot or ally, not a bedroom.
  • The prostitute generally has no say, as she's owned by her pimp, and therefore is not consenting.

Not only taxable income, but people who run other businesses out of their home, perhaps physical therapy or daycare, have to comply with a large host of restrictive building code and inspections in order to acquire and maintain their buisness license.

Sure, if it's regulated and taxed, Uncle Sam will get his part...if you can pay for a massage in a spa, how is this any different?

If you are self employed, you aren't eligible for unemployment anyone...

Why would you assume it would have to be in a parked car or alley? Ever been to Nevada? Amsterdam?

She only needs a pimp because it's illegal. If it's legal and regulated, no need for a pimp...

next...

Here is a basic undeniable and time proven reality. Sex sells. Sex is a valued commodity. Some people may have limited skill sets and qualifications but may be uniquely gifted and talented to be able to provide that service. People sell their services all the time. Legalized prostitution would involve person X willingly offering a service (that lets be honest...some people LOVE to offer and are very good at it) to person Y who values it and is willing to pay for it. People pay for massages, they pay for counseling, they pay for tattoos. We have smoke shops, state run liquor stores, and in some parts of the country marijuana stores. It is ridiculous that Miss Sally cant request a business license, open an establishment, pass the required building and health inspections, and bill customers for a desired service. Everyone...EVERYONE wins. The public health is more secure because while you may still have the occasional 5 dolla independent snaggle toothed crack ho, you will certainly have less of them. And hey...Diannas Discount Dildo Dojo could offer unique business start-up positions, business management experience, you could have minimum wage and higher type positions, there is just a whole lot of 'win' in legalizing the trade.

Regulation has never worked, there is typically an owner/pimp, and the prostitute rarely has a choice regardless.

If prostitution were legalized, public sex could and would still be illegal. And pimps could be made illegal through the regulation, so...
