This is a homograph, two different words with the same spelling and pronunciation, as in "The second one hit one second later." The origins of these two words are uncertain, but I think race as ethnicity comes from the Latin meaning "root" and is related to radical and radish. Race meaning contest may come from a word meaning speed, related to rapid and rather (more quickly, more willingly). The problem with racism is it's built upon the word race. All of the races that I've been to have produced a winner. No such luck here. I'd like to find out who the idiot was that determined that a word used for speed competition should also be used to describe groups of homo-sapiens (Latin for wise man).
He was probably a racist.
Welcome back Oscar.
