Should the govt verify the identity of a person attempting to vote?

Should the govt verify the identity of a person attempting to vote?

  • Total voters

  • Poll closed .
Every time I've gone to vote, both in DC and New York, they had a list of people who were registered to vote at that location. And they checked you off when you arrived. So... yeah, they already do take safeguards, and they work just fine.

Thank you.

It's probably easier to rig a world series.

Huh... you know I was registered in my same state in 2 different areas - they never knew it until I told them. They had my name on a little sheet and checked it off as I arrived too.

Why not?

Once you've voted, no one else can use your name.

If someone does use your name before you get to the polls, you can fill out a form and vote anyway. The information you give will help them determine what happened and possibly disqualify the fake ballot. (if it matters at all)

You are aware that ballots are anonymous. So how do the disqualify the fake ballot?

I've worked at a polling places.

And I am Bill Gate's heir.

It is impossible to commit voter fraud on a scale that would matter.
No its not.

Easy for the people who have access to the machines, especially the computerized voting machines. For a person to walk in the front door and cast multiple votes or vote with a fake identity is quite difficult.

And yet neither you nor anyone else tried to take advantage of that to cast false votes.

Government does verify.

You sign your name verifying you are who you say.

In order to commit voter fraud you have to show up at a polling place with the name of someone who won't show up after you or before you. And hope that no one there knows the person whose name you're using. And BTW, you couldn't do it twice at the same polling place. Or maybe after they change shifts, but think of all the effort you're going to have to put forth just to cast a few extra votes.

In order to commit voter fraud on a level that might matter, sway an election, you'd have to have the massive coordination of busloads of people PLUS you'd have to access to voting rolls and the names of people you're sure will not vote.

It's impossible.

But leave it to Fox News to lie about the reality and make white folks all worried that blacks are going to trick the polls and get Obama a second term...

Why don't the suspicious voters just wear arm bands with a yellow star?? That's basically what you're suggesting.

I can tell you arent interested in a civil discussion.

Look at New Hampshire. They found it pretty easy to obtain ballots fraudulently. One fraudulent vote cast cancels out my honest vote.

Yes, they should verify identities. It protects my vote and prevents fraud.

the phrase: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", applies very well here.

the system is not broken. voter fraud is not a real problem. No federal election results have been altered due to voter fraud.

this is a non-issue brought up by Conservatives to avoid issues of real significance, while exciting their anti-illegal immigrant base.

Last November, the legislature in Mississippi passed new restrictions on voting where you must present a certain ID. Yesterday, Republicans in Mississippi went to the polls in the first statewide election since the law was passed.

97% of those voting yesterday were white. Nobody had to present photo ID because they will not start the law until later in the year when Democrats also come out to the polls.

Why do you think they did this?

watch and learn

Are you suggesting that democrats are so stupid that they can't ho their happy ass to the DMV to get a ID, that only registered republicans are the only ones smart enough to go down to the DMV to get a ID or that only stupid people vote for democrats?

Sorry, but one person voting illegally is a problem. It doesn't have to change the results of the election, it is a problem if anyone who is not authorized to vote manages to cast one.

Pretty sure I did.

There is no real problem ERGO.... no need to make new laws.

Funny how the conservative support big government bureaucracy when it's convenient.

Voting is a state govt responsibility, get a clue.

someone unable to get an ID or not needing one is probably not someone we want voting

great point-libs tell us that if JUST ONE CRIME IS SOLVED OR STOPPED BY making every single gun owner register his guns all that bureaucracy and intrusion is worth it

same here I suspect!!

hey, if they can't vote...then they shouldn't pay any taxes either.

I can live with that, and if they don't pay more in taxes than what they use the converse works as well

that would be the attitude if one based their desire for others to vote based on their own narrow interests in suppressing the vote to benefit their own selfish desires and highly partisan interests.

My son went down to the DMV for one and it's only like $15. Democrats can sell an extra bag of crack to get the money for that.

Nah that would be the attitude of someone who doesn't think uninformed idiots should be imposing their stupidity on smart people. its just as much a partisan hack position to support the mentally incompetent or terminally ignorant voting as those of us who understand that suc voters tend to support your party

I don't deny I advocate stuff that benefits my agenda: what is dishonest and silly is your pretending you're different

that makes no sense, as crack dealers are small-business entrepreneurs. this makes them Republicans.

Actually you express an elitist viewpoint which is based on hating your chosen enemy. I want EVERYBODY to vote who is eligible regardless how or who they vote for.
