We already did, back when we directly supported them in the fight against Russia. Funny how all of the regimes we're fighting today were people we used to throw money and equipment at.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Gee, I had a choice in this poll!
We as a whole don't understand nation building. Bush sent a group of 6 to Afghanistan and had the concept that it would take a cople of years. The experts that met with them there informed them that they were several orders of magnitude off in staffing and funding and an order of magnitude off in the time required. The Afghans don't have a culture that is functional in the modern world. That's too bad. Fixing it is not our responsibility but it may be the cheapest way to go. The other solution is to keep an eye on the terrorist groups there and take them out (too bad for their wives, children and neighbors) as needed with no end in this type of activity.

The Presidential candidate you're supporting for this election is willing to take the political hit for this?

    Quote with link, please.

That's why a rapid exit would not be wise, so I would not support that type of withdrawal. That said, what exactly is the mission? Nation building does not seem to me like something we should be doing. Nor do I think we should try and create safety by invasion. First, because I don't think it works. We can't invade and control enough countries to make us safe. Better to use resources to actually track down and deal with terrorists and not invade nations and nation build.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

About a year and half to two years ago, the mission was nation building. We were making schools, homes, roads, infrastructure of every sort.

Today, the mission is not nation building. Today the mission is GTFO. We're leaving Afghanistan but we're taking our toys with us.

    Which works for me.
