Isn't that what everyone does? Vote for the person who will represent their best interests?

I don't understand this point, that the poor, middle class, whoever is not wealthy, voting for their best interests is bad in comparison to the wealthy voting theirs. That's the whole point, isn't it? Getting the person into off who can best represent us. Is the idea that we should overlook that vote for someone else's interests?

This is the important stuff. We canít get lost in discrimination. We canít get lost in B.S. We canít get lost tearing each other down. I want to make a point here that no matter what you look like, where you come from, how you worship, who you love, how you identify, and yeah, how you run, that if you have good public policy ideas, if you are well qualified for office, bring those ideas to the table, because this is your America, too. This is our commonwealth of Virginia, too.

    Yes.
They have freedom of speech and the right to vote still.

So basically, what all of you who voted "no" are saying is that any stay at home moms do not deserve to be able to vote? Awesome. Way to promote family values. Another failure in logic by republicans.

Voters can vote, but voting is not the same as dictating. People will vote for Democrats who want to raise taxes, but that does not amount to "dictating" how much others pay, because Democrats still favor the elite classes. In other words, liberals can think they're dictating tax policies by casting their vote, but it's not working.

I think people should not be able to vote themselves money. If they are going to rely on public funds to get by, that should eliminate their vote.

Seeing how 50% of American households pay no federal income taxes is it fair for these people to demand that others who do pay income taxes pay more? It always amuses me when people piss bitch and moan about the rich using the tax system to pay as low as possible of a income tax rate when many of these same people use that same tax system to not pay any federal income taxes and to sometimes get back extra.
You phrased the question incorrectly. It should have read: "Do those WHO PAY NO TAXES AT ALL...". If one pays any taxes, even hidden in the cost of goods/services, then they have a legitimate right to participate in the process. Narrowing it down to only income taxes is dishonest.

The discussion gets artificially narrowed down to Federal income taxes because of that 50% statistic (it's great for throwing gasoline on the fire), and because, let's face it, it's almost impossible to live in this country without paying tax of some kind.

I know you knew that, I just figured it was important to let the tax-for-vote people know they're not fooling anybody.

I'm assuming I'm on ignore, so perhaps somebody else can help me out here.

What was Ramen disagreeing with from my post, exactly? I'm not even sure how his point relates to the one I made.

He probably disagreed with this statement:

"I don't feel like it would be ethical for me personally to demand that somebody with a higher effective rate than mine pay even more to support services I use. Especially when my tax burden is not so significant that it prevents me from advancing my current position. Of course, ethics have little to do with the political polarization that's so prevalent in today's society."

These things happen on debate boards.

But the point he made in disagreement had absolutely nothing to do with my point.

Here's my best shot at an abridged transcript:

tessaesque: I don't think it's okay to ask someone who makes more money than I do to pay still more tax money to support services I use, especially since my tax burden isn't too heavy and I still have room for upward mobility.

iliveonramen: Yeah, well, let's see how you do without government services for a day!

tessaesque: I'm not saying I want to do without government services, just that I don't feel right about asking someone better off than me to pay more for the services I use when my tax burden isn't too heavy.

iliveonramen: But pretty much everybody uses more in services than they pay in taxes! So do you want to give up say over how those taxes are spent?!

tessaesque: No, I'm just saying that the solution to services getting more expensive isn't to tax wealthy people more to pay the difference.

    iliveonramen: Blarg!

    Does that help?
