I voted 50% because I was told that the money was ours and it was my responsibility to portion it.

Where did the money come from? That would effect my answer.

Re: How generous are you? (Part I)

If I didn't know where the money was coming from in the first place(the op doesn't say) I probably wouldn't take part.

I assume the money is to be given by a stranger and I am being asked to split with another stranger, seems like highly suspicious activity to me.

If I knew the person who was giving the money away very well and could trust them not to lead me astray, then 50% it would be.

You can take what you want and give them the remainder. You can even decide to give them nothing. The other person has no input into your decision.

How much money do you allocate to the other person?

EDIT: If you know what this experiment is, please don't ruin it for others.
I would split it 50/50.I did nothing on my part to earn the money so it is free money,I can live comfortably and help my family out with half a million dollars just much as I could with over a million dollars. Plus I would hope that if the roles were reversed the other person would do the same thing.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

I'd make Ebenezer Scrooge look to be a spendthrift.
Having money, even found money is quite the responsibility.
Quiet possibily that the man at the table across from me knows how to handle to money better than I - an unknown of course.
And a million is not that much anymore.

Charity begins at home. I have lots of family, so there are many potential recipients for found money. I would be willing to give up 10% for no particular reason. That way another person gets some found money and shares the pleasure, possibly.

50 percent. however, i do not yet have a wife and children. while i like to think i would still make the same decision in that case, i can't predict that definitively.

A million dollars is still a lot of money to a lot of people in this country.
