Chris Christie ordering flags half-staff for Whitney Houston

Do you agree or disagree with the governor?

Federal law allows some states to lower the flag half staff without need for a presidential order. If NJ law allows it, then there's nothing to agree or disagree with.

Of course there is. The question is not whether he had the legal right to lower the flag. The issue is whether it should be done for a drugged out singer who essentially killed herself or whether that honor should be reserved for those more worthy or who gave their lives to protect others.

You could say the same of any funeral. I'm just saying that the honors Ms. Houston has received in death pale in comparison to the honors bestowed upon the worthier recipients you describe.

I missed the constant and universal wailing for the many worthy recipients that took place at the Grammies - as they did for Houston, as one example, or the hours devoted by the cable channels to each military death as we've had for Houston.

Well, I can see how Houston fits right in with soldiers killed on active duty.

That is not the only reason to lower a flag. Houston added significantly to those within the state. I do not know if you have ever been to the area Houston came from. Newark is a hell hole as is the surrounding areas. She instilled hope in many of these people. In spite of her success she returned to the area many times she gave back to the communities, she maintained a residence in New Jersey. That is what is being honored...

I don't have strong feelings one way or another, but I agree with the governor. It's his state, Houston was much beloved in the state, grew up there, got her start there so if he believes the people of NJ would like her honored this way, it's no skin off my nose. Personally I wouldn't do it for any celebrity, but his state... his rules.

I wouldn't have done it if I were Gov. but I don't see any reason to get upset over it.

I think it is a very nice gesture.

She's a singer, NOT a president/general/whatever.

It's a mockery of our system.

Tbh, I'm ******* pissed with that stupid decision.
