Why was the NJ flag not already at half mast for these heroes who paid the ultimate price for their nation and for their State?

I'll tell you why because Christie can get more political capital by flying the flag at half mast for a drug addict than for men who served and died with honor. That is what Christie thinks of New Jersey's finest! Isn't that just great?

How would you like to be a family member of one of these brave men only to be dishonored by the Governor of New Jersey by ignoring their service and sacrifice and flying the flag at half mast for someone who died after a long and trouble life of drug abuse? I cannot imagine. Christie may as well just pee on their graves.
^ This, if true and the flag was never lowered to half mast on their behalf. I am not so concerned that the flag was lowered for her, but that she would take presidence over those who gave for their country. WH took far more from her country than she ever gave.

Do you agree or disagree with the governor's decision to order all flags lowered in honor of Whitney Houston?
I disagree with what he did.Government officialism should not be flying flags at half mast for celebrities.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Of course there is. The question is not whether he had the legal right to lower the flag. The issue is whether it should be done for a drugged out singer who essentially killed herself or whether that honor should be reserved for those more worthy or who gave their lives to protect others.

Well, I can see how Houston fits right in with soldiers killed on active duty.

No, it isn't. Lowering the flag to half staff should mean something important. This doesn't.

Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

I missed the constant and universal wailing for the many worthy recipients that took place at the Grammies - as they did for Houston, as one example, or the hours devoted by the cable channels to each military death as we've had for Houston.
