Explain to me how they contradict? In either question the life of your loved one vs the life of your the leader is in YOUR hands.

Re: Shoot Your President? Shooter Your Child?

I love my family a great deal and can't see myself pushing patriotism to the extent I would actively put the life of my chief executive over theirs.

Still, the issue may be situational and can't be treated casually, since it cuts into the issue of whether it is possible to have any trust or society at all. If the life of a specific president was critical to everything my family believed and sacrificed for, for example, I might owe it to them to save that president ahead them. I probably wouldn't have the resolve to do it, but it would be a morally valid way to fulfill my duty to my family as well as my country.

Under America's current political situation, however, I find that extremely unlikely; the different parts in the Washington machine seem pretty interchangeable to me. I wouldn't mind saving Washington politicians as people (if not as leaders), but in those terms my family comes first.

If you notice something good in yourself, give credit to God, not to yourself, but be certain the evil you commit is always your own and yours to acknowledge.

The thread title asks whether to shoot the President or shoot your child. The poll title asks whether to save the President or save your child. The poll answers don't specify.

IMO your question is correctly answered by Plato.

"Plato saw it as the family cannot be had by the rulers because the rulers could not make a decision based upon protecting their family first. He understood that the dynamic would be protect the family first."

If Plato suggests that leaders would not protect the populace before their own families, I wonder why even speculate as to whether individuals would choose to save a leader before their own families. I don't think Plato was suggesting that leaders have any more desire to protect family than individuals do.

One would guess that the size of the populace and severity of protection required would have to be weighed before answering Plato's question.

I think we could assume if the OP's question was posed to a Secret Service agent or equivalent that the answer might be they would protect their leader at all cost.

You are the only one who doesn't understand it then bud. Because the concept of save loved one or save president, the ultimate question is who comes first family or president? If you would like me to phrase it special for you:

If you were forced to shoot either the president or your family member (your decisions saves one of them), who are you going to pick?

Interesting. I doubt a Secret service agent would surrender his family though.

While Plato's discussion was of course about rulers, he touched upon the fact that society was more important than the family. At least in a proper world the rulers would feel that duty.
