    mad Mind reading

    My goodness!

IBM says: mind reading is no longer a science fiction
I don't even want to think what the abuse of this technology could do! The Thought Police is no longer a nightmare, it's getting real.

    What do you think?

Before we go too far with this "mind reading", we should work on our spelling and grammar.
Also small print must be abolished. The print size used on that link was nearly unreadable.
    Lets keep things in balance.
    Also - no vote .
IMO, this poll is motivated by fear.

This would be GREAT. I can think of several major uses for it right off the bat....

    1. Law Enforcement
    2. Border Security
    3. For the first time in history a Man might know what a woman is actually thinking (assuming that she is thinking, of course).

Yes, this poll is motivated by fear and apparently for a reason (see below).

I sincerely think you should stay away from power as far as possible.

Meh, been there, done that. All the men think about is sex, all the women think about is sex.
Mind reading will be like watching a 24/7 porn movie that never ends

    What do you think?
At this point in time the gadget doesn't do much... allow you to choose this or that option, with much concentration and a bulky headset.

To think that within 5 years there will be a ballcap-sized widget that reacts when we wonder about traffic and displays GPS traffic data is very optimistic. To think it is going to result in privacy-invading mind-reading anytime real soon is probably much too dramatic.

Having said that.... yes, there's a lot of research on how to do away with the keyboard and mouse and control the computer with your mind. It will happen someday... I wouldn't be surprised if it was commonplace by 2030. That doesn't mean the same thing as a "mind-reading machine".

Lemme splain.... if you type your honest innermost thoughts out on a keyboard and post them to the Internet, then you just put your thoughts out there for the world to "read". However, the keyboard cannot read your mind without your cooperation.

I expect mental-control-of-computers will be similar, in that a certain amount of effort will be involved and the device will not be able to simply "read your innermost thoughts" on its own.

Right now there are some bulky MRI-like devices that can (with varying reliability) detect certain broad mental states, like fight-or-flight anxiety... there was a story about HomeLandSec working on such a thing with an eye towards airline screening. Again, going from there to something that can actually *read your thoughts* is a big leap anytime in the next 50 years.

At this point, IMO this is a molehill.... no need to make a mountain of it.

    Re: Mind reading

Considering the mind's processes are just electrically firing neurons, was "mind-reading" even that far-off of an idea the begin with? Ever heard of neuroimaging?
