Definition: lack of toleration; unwillingness or refusal to tolerate or respect contrary opinions or beliefs, persons of different races or backgrounds, etc.

Contrary opinions - Not wrong

Contrary beliefs - Not always wrong

Persons of different races - wrong

Persons of different background - sometimes wrong

Expand the definition to include religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or any natural born trait... all wrong reasons to be intolerant.

Leviticus condemns those who engage in gay-sex, to death. This is a fact.

The third book of the Hebrew bible, a manual for priests compiled around the time of moses, a book of archaic tribal laws and traditions that tells us a lot about the people and the time.

Instructions on various ways and times to sacrifice animals.

Ways to clean up after childbirth, disease, unclean discharges, etc.

But what does that have to do with the contemporary view of homosexuality?

That's a favorite self description of many contemporary libs. Clever, too, since it allows them to declare their opponents intolerant, while being intolerant of their opponents. Preserves their feeling of moral superiority, nicely as well, which is of course the attraction to being a liberal.

Abe Lincoln was intolerant of intolerance.

not inherently. there are, in fact, philosophers who claim that tolerance is wrong.
And they would be correct__Tolerance is slowly eating away at western civilization.

Also, it was a joke.

I notice that the posters who think the world consists of only two things, that which is "liberal" and that which is not, rarely have a sense of humor.

Tolerance created Western civilization. Losing it is what will kill it.

Oh, I've always found the line funny. I just didn't think you meant it that way. You are aware you're not the first to say that, right?

Stop yammering about "liberals" - that might help.

The point of the modern idea of "tolerance" is to just get along, and not to let our differences get between us. We need to work together for the common good and not get all bent out of shape over things that don't really matter, like skin color, religion, sexual orientation, cultural differences, and other such things that don't really make us particularly different anyway.

unfortunately, some folks think that if their religion commands them to, they should have the right to not only feel intolerance...but express it and enact it.

So then it is not wrong to be intolerant of homosexual marriage, if intolerance is only wrong according to the beliefs of biased people?

It is wrong to be intolerant of homosexual marriage not because intolerance is wrong but because it is wrong to be intolerant of homosexual marriage.

Some intolerance is morally wrong. Some intolerance may be disagreeable but never crosses a certain line. Some intolerance is socially expected and encouraged.

Depends on the specific intolerance being addressed.

Of course in this case, Wake is trying to cast a wide net about "intolerance" so he can claim that his dislike of SSM is leading to his persecution by hypocritical liberals. Zzzzz....

The bottom line (of most things on DP) is that context and individual situational consideration is of the utmost importance.

There is an old line about someone so open-minded their brains have fallen out. We have taken tolerance a bit too far, and made it into a good in and of itself; which it is not.

actually, there is a lot of evidence that the USA is not yet tolerant enough.

as far as other countries, they have a LONG way to go.

No. Tolerance did not create anything. It has however contributed to Western Civilization in positive and negative ways. "Tolerance" can be both good and/or bad.

We haven't taken tolerance far enough.

We haven't taken tolerance far enough.

That would depend on who you ask, lol.

For example being to tolerant of certain actions is inviting trouble. Tolerance is quite subjective.

This is a simple question:

Is intolerance wrong?

The question arises because people have a tendency to connote intolerance with something negative.

Intolerance can be both good or bad, it depends on the individual situation.
