In the ad, Obama is quoted as saying "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose", but his full quote is this: "Sen. McCain's campaign actually said, and I quote, ‘If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose.’" However, it does say 23 seconds earlier that the comments where from 2008. So, is this ad accurately portraying what Obama said, it is dishonest, and if it is dishonest, does this cross a line beyond the normal dishonest political ad(yes, I know that is kinda vague, it is up to you to judge how to interpret it).

Phew. I'll be able to sleep tonight.

A "spelling/grammer nazxi" by any other name is still a spelling/grammar nazi.

Re: Is This Add Dishonest or Does It Cross The Line.

The truly amazing thing is that so far, from what I've heard (NPR and MSNBC), they're sticking by it. They were at one point, anyway.

It's dishonest, but what can anyone really do about it?

Well, obviously it's dishonest. As to whether it crosses a line, I dunno. I can't recall any ads offhand that are more BRAZENLY dishonest (except for maybe Liddy Dole's ad in 2008 where she faked her opponent's voice saying "There is no god.") But in general, dishonest ads are par for the course. I'm somewhat surprised that Mitt Romney would run this; not because I think he's above negative campaigning, but because it's difficult to maintain plausible deniability and say with a straight face that you're just presenting the facts when it's so blatantly false.

With that said, it's really not that big of a deal. There will be more dishonest ads from both the Obama and Romney campaigns in the general election; they'll just get better at making them dishonest in a way where they can pretend they aren't dishonest.

What kind of a "Global Moderator" cannot fix a poll?

Answer: A static moderator.

Yep, taking people out of context to put in attack ads is very dishonest and unacceptable.

Re: Is This Add Dishonest or Does It Cross The Line.

Bad move on Mitt's part. A lie by omission, tho true in the abstract.

Re: Is This Add Dishonest or Does It Cross The Line.

Meh ... dishonesty of the stupid kind. And since it's blatant and intentionally misleading I'm going with crossing a line.

Re: Is This Add Dishonest or Does It Cross The Line.

Eleven people so far are okay with blatant lying.

ETA: Crap, I forget that unregistered users can spam poll results.

Re: Is This Add Dishonest or Does It Cross The Line.

I'm changing my vote.

What BO is quoted as saying is exactly right.

I'm granting artistic license and daring BO to come out and say that his talking about the economy will NOT cause him to lose.

SMART move Mitt.

Damn smart.

PS - It's the same as asking, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?" Only it forces Obama to restate the words and remind voters that the economy sucks even worse. He won't do it. He CAN'T call Mitt out on this.

I agree, I voted incorrectly above. I meant to vote that it was dishonest and crossed the line.

Yep, reviewing the actual poll numbers, only 1 member has voted the ad is honest, the TurtleDude!

I stand corrected, as LuckyDan has thrown his hat in with the TurtleDude, we now have 2 members that think the ad was honest. 6 that think it was dishonest, and 3 that think it was dishonest and crossed the line.

I won't say "honest," but I will say shrewd. Let BO say it's untrue.

"But I was quoting McCain! HE said it! HE said it!" The quote still stands.

Even if BO was quoting McCain, the words still ring true.

Good ad. Looking forward to the rebuttal. (Of course, I speak as one who considers BO a lying sack of excrement.)

It's very dishonest.

The ad is blatantly dishonest and is committing a crime against the American people. Karma would now have Romney getting caught in bed with two midget hookers and a gallon of koolwhip. The man has proven himself to be unworthy of trust. This is disgusting.

How anyone could defends its use and not condemn it is puzzling. Is this how far some have sunk in the rabid ideological wars?
