edit. you appear to be correct.

however, I see very little difference between a federal union of semi-autonomous states, and federal districts.
It's just a classification - doesn't actually mean anything beyond a way to categorize and compare. Considering who else is Federated - the differences can be vast. From the US to Iraq, Iraq to Russia and then down to Brazile. Completely different nations entirely.

I think it sounds neat - Star Trekian in nature . . . Rugged and tough. I kind of like that we're thought of as the "Federated States" in some other countries.

think the canadians would take issue with that considering the war of 1812

You mean our second civil war? That no more made us separate nations than either our first civil war or our last.

A long long time ago in a land not so far away there once was a young captain . . . fast forward . . . one Bjarni and a fur trade later . . . fast forward . . . some wars . . . fast forward . . . and we still don't like each other.

I don't quite get the sentiment, though

What's to get? Canadians are my people, and I love them. I love them as much as I love Americans, because they are all my people.

The United States is a single nation. In the past states were much more autonomous than they currently are, but that's simply not the reality in the US now.

What you have is a problem of what the United States IS versus what the United States was INTENDED to be.

From my reading of history, the United States was intended to be much closer to what the EU is attempting to put together than truly a single, cohesive nation. However, after 1860 and the disgusting and unConstitutional actions of one Abraham Lincoln (including using the US Constitution as toilet paper), we have BECOME a single, semi-cohesive nation. Personally, I would prefer that we had remained as we were intended to be rather than becoming such.

Re: What is the United States?

So it seems that most generally agree that we are not individual nation-states currently and that we are a single nation - with a few minor differences on the history of how we got here. It's good to know I'm not crazy and that I was correct to assume that Illinois is not its own nation-state.

However, because several people seem to vehemently believe in this claim, I've decided to put this argument up to a poll in order to see whether or not this is a commonly held belief that I've just become aware of in the last few days (or at least a popular argument that I've never encountered before). I accept that I could just be generally ignorant - though my history classes disagree.

Simple question: Is the United States a single nation like Germany, China, etc. OR is it a federation of nation-states similar to the EU or the UN? Why or why not?
Such a view was probably valid at one time, but the civil war changed that, likely for good.
