If only I could escape the constant assault of Christmas songs in virtually every public space.

I wholeheartedly agree. I could go the rest of my life without EVER hearing Burl Ives's "Holly Jolly Christmas," Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," or "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" again. Arrrrgh.

I think the spririt has been lost to the "money changers".

That's about what I was thinking. The greed is overwhelming. There is so much junk being shoved in our faces to buy this and buy that, so it takes away from the true spirit of Christmas. Money, money, money. Spend more. Spend more. Spend more. And when the money isn't there as we'd like it to be, then we feel like crapola that we can't give more presents.

My guess is that the advertising starts asap so the manufactures can make a killing by the time Christmas actually arrives. With the economy so bad, they have to pump, prod and push us harder and longer into buying, buying, buying. And by the time Christmas rolls around, we're worn out and then the credit card bills come rolling in. And many times the bills will arrive at doorsteps before Santas sleigh lands on the roof. It's much easier to spend with credit cards, not giving a thought as to the bill, than it is to actually have to face reality trying to find the money to pay those bills. It's all exhausting.

Damn people, have you no self control. Since when do decorations and advertising make, as in require, someone to buy a product. It is only commericalized bcause you buy into it.

Blaming the merchant for your own failings is really sad.

I wish Christmas would restrict itself to the second half of December and leave the rest of the year alone. There was even Christmas stuff on November 1st this year. Thanksgiving has turned into pre-Christmas. It's kind of absurd.

Quite true.

However, those of us who don't buy into still are affected in some ways. We are annoyed by ads and stupid Christmas carols, for example.

The second option, having the most votes at this time, pretty much proves the first option imo.

Maybe you should grow up. If you let something this minor annoy you so much you may need to get some help.

Sometimes I'm a bit annoyed when the stores have the stuff out by Halloween. However, I love Christmas. Christmas is what you make of it. If you don't go in for the commercialism, then don't. I love crafting, Christmas cookies, and the gift exchange parties - where your gift gets stolen over and over again. I can recite "the night before Christmas by heart." And I loved when my child was still young enough to believe in Santa Claus. I feel a bit guilty passing bell ringers without dropping in a little change in their bucket. Whatever...Hit me over the head with a candy cane. That's me!

Is Christmas too commercialized? Yes.

Every year we seem to care about how much shoppers spent for the holiday instead of the holiday itself.

imo

Commercialized Christmas would be much better if we never had that song where a chorus of high voices sing: "Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la".

I notice that that most irritating of song clip loops gets the most use in advertising. I guess it works like: "Ring around the collar". You hate it, so you remember it.

People seem to have an idea that Christmas is some sort of religious holiday or something. That might be true if we acknowledge the real object of worship is the almighty dollar.

Christmas is about doing whatever it takes to get people to spend money they don't have on stuff they don't need.

And they start with the Christmas stuff before Halloween.

Bah, humbug.

What is most striking about this debate is the number of pathetic victims whining about the commercialization of Christmas. If you whiners don't like Christmas and the whole Christmas season and traditions, ignore it. Are you incapable of controlling what is going on in your lives? Take a vacation to a Islamic third world country during December if you feel the need to not be subjected to anything that is related to Christmas. At the very minimum......grow up.

I am disappointed but not surprised by the majority of responses here. I don't mind a little commercialization but Christmas is about Jesus and spending time with family something lost on several most of all sadly children. When at my local Walmart people are ****ting on the floor because they were out of the TV they wanted, and women are blowing other guys to try and get them to sell (not give) them the TV they just bought for the same price, people are getting their children to steal things out of other peoples carts then I think we have gone WAY to far with it.

Yes, we've gone way too far. The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas has morphed into a total greed fest.

Clearly some people have taken the commercialism too far, but it's never ruined Christmas for me. I buy gifts, I receive gifts, but my family doesn't get too worried about how much is being spent on what items. The best part of Christmas is still getting a few weeks off, visiting family/friends, and my grandmother's baking (she still wont give anyone the recipe for her Christmas cake, which she soaks in rum for over a year. That stuff is awesome).

oh jog on....

I've never been a big Christmas person. I mean if Christmas carols are so fantastic why is it no one plays them on the radio, etc. except at Christmas? But, yes, it does seem over commercialized. On the other hand what isn't advertised to hell and back in America these days? I'd like a lot less commercialism regarding all things.

I didn't take the OP as "whining" about the Christmas season or it's traditions at all. I heard today where a lady pepper sprayed other customers at a store to get a gaming system (just noticed that Higgins posted a link to the story). That's not tradition, it's stupid. On one hand, I think the commercialism makes it easy to be distracted from other more important aspects of the day, whether it's celebrating the birth of Christ (for those of us who do), time to be with family, enjoying watching a child's excitement or whatever. On the other hand, as with everything else, Christmas is entirely what you make of it, so, the ideal answer for me would have been, "It is too commercialized but it hasn't destroyed the meaning of Christmas for me."

We'll have this thread cleaned up in a jiffy...

Hey...best response to ending the commercialization of Christmas...is to STOP SHOPPING.

Isnt it ironic that you resurrected a dead thread, created a zombie thread, and referenced the OZ in doing so?

Thread necromancy is at work here.

Was in Wal*mart today and was shocked to see xmas tree's up, xmas music playing and the staff wearing xmas hats! Xmas has been very commercial for a long time as we all know but is it getting too much? Its only Nov 15th and it is already being shoved down our throats, I mean what about thanksgiving? This will be my 3rd thanksgiving and you hardly even hear about it!
Growing up I used to get excited on Dec 1st seeing all the decorations being put up and hyas it got closer you used to get that nice warm feeling inside knowing xmas was just around the cornor. Nowdays they start so early that by the time xmas actually comes I just want it to be over with and all the good spirt and magic of xmas is lost. I was brought up a catholic and I have to say its very odd for me that there is not even a sign in the stores that it is a relgious holiday just full of tacky snowmen and cheap toys.

I have to say this year even before Halloween was over, the Thanksgiving decorations were on sale 50% off and the stores had already started filling their shelves with Christmas items. I have to agree this year the push for Christmas started ahead of schedule. I think a lot of it has to do with low expectations for retail this year. People are scaling back on their giving. Most haven't seen a decent raise this past year, many are still unemployed, their taxes went up local, state and federal, their insurance premiums have jumped thanks to Obamacare, while many are seeing their utilities take a hike due to new EPA regulations.

didnt answer the poll because no answers fit

chistmas is what you make it, its that simple
