    Re: Has commercialism ruined Christmas?

    Commercialized Christmas would be much better if we never had that song where a chorus of high voices sing: "Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la".

I notice that that most irritating of song clip loops gets the most use in advertising. I guess it works like: "Ring around the collar". You hate it, so you remember it.

People seem to have an idea that Christmas is some sort of religious holiday or something. That might be true if we acknowledge the real object of worship is the almighty dollar.

Christmas is about doing whatever it takes to get people to spend money they don't have on stuff they don't need.

And they start with the Christmas stuff before Halloween.

    Bah, humbug.

What is most striking about this debate is the number of pathetic victims whining about the commercialization of Christmas. If you whiners don't like Christmas and the whole Christmas season and traditions, ignore it. Are you incapable of controlling what is going on in your lives? Take a vacation to a Islamic third world country during December if you feel the need to not be subjected to anything that is related to Christmas. At the very minimum......grow up.

I am disappointed but not surprised by the majority of responses here. I don't mind a little commercialization but Christmas is about Jesus and spending time with family something lost on several most of all sadly children. When at my local Walmart people are ****ting on the floor because they were out of the TV they wanted, and women are blowing other guys to try and get them to sell (not give) them the TV they just bought for the same price, people are getting their children to steal things out of other peoples carts then I think we have gone WAY to far with it.

In theory, some of those loopholes were understandable, but in practice they sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying ten percent of his salary, and thatís crazy." -Reagan

Yes, we've gone way too far. The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas has morphed into a total greed fest.

Clearly some people have taken the commercialism too far, but it's never ruined Christmas for me. I buy gifts, I receive gifts, but my family doesn't get too worried about how much is being spent on what items. The best part of Christmas is still getting a few weeks off, visiting family/friends, and my grandmother's baking (she still wont give anyone the recipe for her Christmas cake, which she soaks in rum for over a year. That stuff is awesome).

I've never been a big Christmas person. I mean if Christmas carols are so fantastic why is it no one plays them on the radio, etc. except at Christmas? But, yes, it does seem over commercialized. On the other hand what isn't advertised to hell and back in America these days? I'd like a lot less commercialism regarding all things.

I didn't take the OP as "whining" about the Christmas season or it's traditions at all. I heard today where a lady pepper sprayed other customers at a store to get a gaming system (just noticed that Higgins posted a link to the story). That's not tradition, it's stupid. On one hand, I think the commercialism makes it easy to be distracted from other more important aspects of the day, whether it's celebrating the birth of Christ (for those of us who do), time to be with family, enjoying watching a child's excitement or whatever. On the other hand, as with everything else, Christmas is entirely what you make of it, so, the ideal answer for me would have been, "It is too commercialized but it hasn't destroyed the meaning of Christmas for me."
